그러나 경기장 주변 도로와 공영주차장은 장기간 세워둔 대형 화물차들이 사실상 점령하면서 방문객들이 차량을 세울 곳을 찾지 못해 수백 미터 떨어진 곳에 주차하는 일이 반복되고 있다.

실제 취재 결과 야구장 인근에는 여러 대의 대형 화물차가 장기간 주차돼 있었으며, 일부 주차금지 표지판은 훼손된 채 방치돼 있어 단속 의지를 찾아보기 어렵다는 지적도 나왔다.

한 대회 관계자는 "전국에서 찾아온 선수단과 관계자들이 가장 먼저 마주하는 곳이 야구장이 아니라 대형트럭 주차장이라는 말까지 나온다"며 "차를 세울 곳이 없어 경기 시작 전부터 진이 빠질 정도다. 스포츠도시를 홍보하려면 기본적인 주차환경부터 갖춰야 하는 것 아니냐"고 목소리를 높였다.

이어 "포항시는 스포츠도시를 내세우며 각종 전국대회를 잇달아 유치하고 있지만, 정작 방문객들이 가장 먼저 체감하는 것은 무질서한 주차환경"이라며 "주차금지 표지판조차 구부러진 채 방치돼 있는 모습은 도시 관리 수준을 그대로 보여준다"고 지적했다.

또 다른 시민은 "수십억 원을 들여 스포츠마케팅을 하는 것도 중요하지만 경기장 주변 질서 하나 제대로 관리하지 못한다면 도시 이미지는 한순간에 무너질 수 있다"며 "전국 손님을 초청해 놓고 가장 기본적인 주차 문제조차 해결하지 못하는 것은 행정의 무관심이라는 비판을 피하기 어려울 것"이라고 말했다.
