Fishing Boat Runs Grounded on Rocks in Thick Sea Fog… Pohang Coast Guard Rescues All 5 Safely
A fishing boat that ran aground on rocks after veering off course due to thick sea fog was safely rescued through the cooperation of the Coast Guard and civilian vessels. No casualties or marine pollution occurred as a result of this accident.
The Pohang Coast Guard announced that it launched a rescue operation after receiving a report around 10:35 PM on the 20th stating, "It appears a fishing boat has run aground on rocks near the breakwater of Daejin Port and is unable to move."
Upon receiving the report, the Coast Guard urgently dispatched maritime and land rescue personnel from the Guryongpo Substation and the Pohang Rescue Team to the scene.
On-site inspection revealed that the 9-ton fishing vessel, Vessel A, had run aground on the rocks after misjudging its course amidst poor visibility caused by the dense sea fog. Although seawater entered the vessel due to damage to part of the hull bottom, the vessel's bilge pumps functioned normally, preventing further flooding. It was confirmed that all five crew members were also safe.
Immediately after the accident, nearby civilian fishing vessel B attempted to free the grounded vessel but failed to move the hull stuck on the reef. Subsequently, civilian fishing vessel C, arranged by the Guryongpo Police Station, connected a tow line alongside the Pohang Rescue Team to continue the rescue operation, and the grounded vessel was safely refloated at approximately 2:07 AM on the 21st.
Later, vessel A, which was unable to operate on its own due to a main engine failure, was towed by vessel C and safely entered Guryongpo Port at approximately 3:30 AM on the same day.
The Coast Guard explained that there were no casualties or marine pollution resulting from the accident, and that a breathalyzer test conducted on the captain showed no abnormalities. Lee Geun-an, head of the Pohang Coast Guard, stated, "In situations where visibility is limited due to sea fog or other factors, it is crucial to continuously monitor the shipping route and actively utilize navigation equipment such as radar and GPS," and urged the crew to "prevent maritime accidents by strictly adhering to safety navigation regulations."
