Combination of Brain Engineering and Robotics… DGIST Holds Plaque Unveiling Ceremony and Workshop for 27.9 Billion Won ‘Glocal Lab’
DGIST (Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, President Lee Kun-woo) is accelerating the establishment of a next-generation research ecosystem that fuses brain engineering and robotics technology.
The DGIST Center for Brain Engineering Convergence and the Institute of Robotics and Mechanical & Electronic Engineering announced that they successfully concluded a joint plaque unveiling ceremony and workshop celebrating the selection of the ‘2025 Science and Engineering Academic Research Support Project Glocal Lab’ on the 22nd at Consilience Hall. The event was attended by approximately 120 people, including researchers, students, and representatives from related organizations.
The event proceeded in the order of a joint workshop and panel discussion to share key research tasks and visions to be pursued in the future, following the plaque unveiling ceremony of the two research institutions. The researchers gathered at the site discussed the latest technological trends in brain engineering and robotics, and jointly explored ways to identify interdisciplinary convergence projects and commercialize research results.
**Combination of Brain Engineering and Robotics… DGIST Holds Plaque Unveiling Ceremony and Workshop** Looking at the specific research projects, the Brain Engineering Convergence Research Center is focusing on developing neural circuit digital twin technology based on ‘Neuro-Replica.’ The vision is to lead the future healthcare market by precisely analyzing the causes of brain diseases through replicating the operating mechanisms of actual human neural networks in a virtual environment, and connecting this to AI-based disease prediction, personalized neural stimulation, and next-generation artificial sensory technology.
The Institute of Robotics and Mechanical & Electronic Engineering is concentrating on ‘TransHuman Robotics’ research to build next-generation robots and integrated platforms that transcend human physical, sensory, and cognitive limitations. By combining brain engineering, which elucidates the operating principles of the brain, with robotic technology that realizes them in physical form, the two institutions plan to expand the scope of their technology beyond rehabilitation, medicine, and manufacturing to include fields such as space and polar exploration, including the ocean. Choi Ji-woong, Director of the Brain Engineering Convergence Research Center, stated, “This is a meaningful occasion to announce the launch of the Glocal Lab project and solidify a close cooperative system among researchers,” adding, “We will generate world-class research achievements that contribute to the treatment of brain diseases and the advancement of future medicine, focusing on neuro-replica technology.”
Park Seok-ho, Director of the Institute of Robotics and Mechanical-Electronic Engineering, emphasized, “Robotics for Human Extension is a field that requires the comprehensive integration of brain science, robotics, AI, and medicine,” and added, “We will strengthen research cooperation with leading domestic and international institutions to establish ourselves as a hub for global robot research.”
DGIST President Lee Kun-woo pledged, “The simultaneous selection for the Glocal Lab project is a result that proves DGIST’s excellent regional research capabilities and world-class competitiveness,” and promised, “We will provide active support to help the university leap forward as a global innovative research university, focusing on core future strategic research fields such as physical AI, human digital twins, and quantum sensing.”
Meanwhile, the two research organizations will receive 27 billion won in state funding over the next nine years through this Glocal Lab project. In addition, 900 million won in local funding from Daegu Metropolitan City to the Brain Engineering Convergence Research Center will be added, bringing the total project cost to 27.9 billion won.
