권 의원은 이날 “지난 23일 원내대표실에서 상임위 배정 문제로 항의하던 중 감정을 절제하지 못해 정점식 원내대표와 송언석 전 원내대표에게 큰 결례를 범한 것에 대해 거듭 머리 숙여 사과한다”며 “당원과 국민들께도 충격과 실망을 안겨드린 점에 대해 거듭 깊이 사과드린다”고 말했다. 

권 의원은 그러면서 “ 나는 지난 27년간 한 번도 당을 떠나지 않고 천막당사 시절 등 위기 때마다 헌신해 왔으며, 국민의힘은 나의 '정치의 둥지이자 인생의 전부'”라고 강조했다. 

이어 “지난 일주일간 큰 자책의 시간을 보냈고, 앞으로 더 많이 반성하고 자숙하며 국민과 당을 위해 매진하겠다”고 거듭 강조한 뒤 “윤리위 징계 절차에 성실히 임하겠다”고 덧붙였다. 특히 그는 자신의 징계 문제가 의원들 간의 갈등과 분열의 불씨가 되지 않기를 간절히 바란다고 거듭 강조했다. 

의원총회에서 재차 사과하면서 "분열을 막고 당이 나아갈 길을 찾아야 한다"고 당부했지만 현재 국민의힘이 직면한 구조적 갈등의 골로 보아서는 이번 사과가 진정한 화해로 이어질 수 있을지에 대해서는 시선이 엇갈리고 있다.

지역 정치권 관계자 일각에서는 “작금의 국민의힘은 혁신과 변화의 목소리에 귀를 닫은 채 기득권을 고수하려는 세력들로 인해 파열음이 계속될 것”으로 전망했다. 특히, 당의 쇄신보다는 자신들의 안위와 잇속만을 챙긴다는 비판을 받고 있는 ‘윤 어게인’ 집단과 장동혁 파의 오만이 지속되는 한 일시적인 미봉책에 그칠 뿐 언제든 더 큰 내홍으로 폭발할 수 있다는 시선이 팽배하다.

이어 그는 “지금 국민의힘에 가장 절실한 것은 분열을 막고 신뢰를 회복하는 일이다. 그러나 상임위 배정 시스템의 비합리성 개선과 계파 이기주의 청산이라는 근본적인 과제를 해결하지 못한다면, 이번 사태는 반복되는 파행의 전주곡에 불과할 것”이라고 전제하면서 “국민의힘이 진정한 쇄신의 길로 나아갈 수 있을지, 아니면 구태의연한 갈등 속에 침몰할지 뼈를 깎는 결단이 요구된다”고 강조했다.
