연구팀은 이를 해결하기 위해 PINN(Physics-Informed Neural Network) 모델을 적용했다.

A research team led by Professor Yoo-Chan Ahn of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Keimyung University has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) prediction technology capable of significantly improving the efficiency of hydrogen production processes utilizing waste plastics. The team introduced a Physical Information-Based Neural Network (PINN) model that incorporates physical laws into the learning process. A key feature of this model is its ability to demonstrate high prediction accuracy even in environments with limited data.
Professor Ahn's team developed a physical information-based AI model to predict the amount of hydrogen produced in the waste plastic gasification process and published their findings in an international academic journal. The paper was published in the 2026 edition of the international journal *Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence*. Researcher Jun-Hyuk Son served as the first author, Researcher Hyo-Jin Jeong as the second author, and Professor Yoo-Chan Ahn as the corresponding author.
The waste plastic gasification process is a technology that converts waste into energy resources, such as hydrogen, by decomposing it at high temperatures. However, as the amount of product varies significantly depending on process conditions, accurate prediction and efficient operational control are considered critical challenges. Existing AI-based prediction models require a massive amount of data to achieve high accuracy, but they faced limitations in real-world industrial processes due to the difficulty of securing sufficient data.
To address this, the research team applied the Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) model. PINN is a method that incorporates physical knowledge, such as reaction kinetics and thermodynamic equilibrium, into existing AI learning. By applying these physical laws as soft constraints to the loss function, the team designed three models—a kinetics-based model, an equilibrium-based model, and an integrated model—and compared their performance.
The results showed that the PINN model maintained superior prediction performance compared to conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), even with only 1% of the total training data. Furthermore, gradient-based residual analysis confirmed that the prediction results closely matched the thermodynamic and reaction kinetic trends of actual reaction processes.
This study is significant in that it demonstrates that AI models incorporating physical knowledge can serve as reliable prediction tools, even in industrial processes where data acquisition is difficult and variables are numerous. In fact, it is expected to be widely utilized for the real-time optimization and automatic control of waste plastic-based hydrogen production processes, as well as for the construction of eco-friendly energy production systems.
Professor Ahn Yu-chan stated, "We have confirmed the potential of utilizing a surrogate model combined with physical knowledge," adding, "We plan to further develop this into a technology for real-time optimization and control of waste plastic-based hydrogen production processes."
Meanwhile, this research was conducted with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea's Basic Research Program and the Master's Student Research Encouragement Program.
