대구시는 지난 2일 폭염 중앙재난안전대책본부 비상단계가 2단계로 격상됨에 따라 비상 대응 체계를 대폭 강화했다. 추경호 시장은 3일 열린 구청장·군수 긴급대책회의에서 “폭염은 단순한 계절 현상이 아닌 시민의 생명과 직결된 재난”이라며, 단 한 명의 인명피해도 발생하지 않도록 무더위쉼터 공백 없는 관리를 강하게 당부했다. 특히 휴가철 복지 시설 공백 방지 및 무더위쉼터의 연장 운영·주말 개방 검토를 주문했다.

이에 대구시는 대구노인복지관협회와의 협력을 통해 이번 주부터 지역 내 27개 노인복지관을 토요일에도 무더위쉼터로 전면 개방하기로 결정했다. 이로써 평일 이용이 어려웠던 어르신과 지역 주민들도 주말 동안 안전하게 피서를 즐길 수 있게 됐다.

추 시장은 4일 오전, 하루 평균 3천여 명이 찾는 달서구노인종합복지관을 시작으로 총 5개 시설을 연속 점검했다.

특히 달서구노인종합복지관에서는 앞치마를 두르고 노인일자리 참여 어르신들과 함께 배식 봉사에 나섰으며, 식사 후 어르신들과 마주 앉아 폭염 속 생생한 건의 사항을 경청했다.

현장점검을 마치고는 “폭염은 행정이 현장에서 얼마나 밀착되어 작동하느냐에 따라 시민 생명이 좌우되는 재난”이라고 강조하며 “기온이 누그러질 때까지 현장을 직접 살피고 필요한 조치를 즉시 보완하겠다”고 밝혔다.

이어 그는 이날도 “토요일 복지관 전면 개방과 무더위쉼터 연장 운영 등 대책이 현장에서 차질 없이 작동하도록 구·군과 긴밀히 협력해 폭염 기간 인명피해 제로(Zero)를 달성하겠다”고 강조했다.
