Daegu City and Korea Forest Service Push for Establishment of ‘Urban Forest Fire Joint Response Center’… Firefighting Personnel Doubled

Daegu Metropolitan City is joining forces with the Korea Forest Service to accelerate the establishment of a ‘Forest Fire Joint Response Center’ dedicated to handling forest disasters within the region.

Following the temporary deployment of the Korea Forest Service’s Special Forest Fire Disaster Suppression Unit to the City Hall Sanggyeok Building earlier this year, Daegu City recently expanded its related personnel from the existing 8 to 16. In November, the city plans to renovate idle facilities within the Gomo Sales Office on Beoman-ro to formally relocate the unit, utilizing it as a core base for responding to forest disasters in the urban area.

This project was planned to enhance urban forest fire response capabilities and further solidify the initial firefighting system, learning from the Hamjisan forest fire incident that occurred last April.

To this end, Daegu City and the Southern Regional Forest Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last April. The two agencies agreed to jointly manage the entire process from prevention to suppression, including the establishment and operation of a joint response center, immediate joint deployment in the event of a wildfire, conducting joint drills, and the pre-collection of agricultural byproducts.

Currently, 16 special firefighting personnel and three pieces of equipment, including multi-purpose firefighting vehicles, are on standby at the Sanggyeok Office to respond to forest hazards such as wildfires and landslides in the Daegu area. This spring, they were deployed to three wildfire sites, including Palgong CC, to conduct joint firefighting operations, and have continued on-site coordination by exclusively handling patrol and control duties in the landslide-prone areas of Nogok-dong, Joya-dong, and Seobyeon-dong in Buk-gu.

With the establishment of the response center at the Gomo Tollgate this coming November, accessibility to the Daegu Outer Ring Road and major interchanges (ICs) will improve, significantly reducing the time it takes to reach the scene. Consequently, it will serve as a base for initial firefighting operations covering a wide area, including not only the entire Daegu region but also the nearby Gyeongsan and Cheongdo regions. The Korea Forest Service will bear the full cost of remodeling the response center and operating the firefighting team. By stationing national-level professional personnel and state-of-the-art equipment there, the center is expected to save approximately 1 billion won in state funds annually. The Korea Forest Service plans to complete the basic and detailed designs this month, finish construction by October, and begin full-scale operations following the relocation of the firefighting team in November.

Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, “The establishment of the Joint Forest Fire Response Center is a model example of a forest safety network built through cooperation between the central government and local governments,” adding, “We will continue to strengthen training tailored for urban and nighttime forest fires through ongoing cooperation with the Korea Forest Service and create a safe city where citizens can feel secure.”
