DGIST Selected for 21.8 Billion Won International Joint Research Project… Sets Out to Develop Treatment Technologies for Pediatric Encephalopathy
DGIST has been selected for a large-scale government international joint research project and will work with overseas research institutions to establish a global research platform to overcome pediatric encephalopathy.
DGIST announced that it was finally selected for the "Establishment of Cooperation Platforms and Support for Joint Research Among Top-Tier Research Institutions" under the "2026 Overseas Excellent Research Institution Cooperation Hub Establishment Project," promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Foundation of Korea.
This project will receive a total of 21.85 billion won in government research funding over 10 years, starting in 2026. DGIST will serve as the lead institution, with the Korea Brain Research Institute and Sungkyunkwan University College of Medicine participating as domestic joint research institutions. Overseas, six universities, including the National Institute of Physiology and Information Technology (NIPS) in Japan, will form a consortium to conduct the joint research.
The research team plans to establish a world-class research collaboration system with the goal of identifying ion channel abnormalities, known as a major cause of pediatric encephalopathy, and securing precision medicine technologies and developing therapeutic candidate substances utilizing artificial intelligence (AI).
Pediatric encephalopathy is a representative intractable neurological disease caused by genetic ion channel abnormalities that lead to seizures, developmental disorders, and motor impairments. It is considered a field requiring systematic research to elucidate the operating principles and functional abnormalities of the gene mutations that cause the disease.
The research team will conduct multi-scale functional verification extending from the discovery of patient-derived ion channel mutations to molecular-level structural and functional analysis, as well as cellular, neural circuit, and behavioral levels. Furthermore, they plan to develop core source technologies for the realization of precision medicine, including mutation prediction technologies utilizing AI and computational models, as well as the discovery and efficacy verification of structure-based therapeutic candidate substances.
The core of the project is the establishment of an international joint research platform that combines the expertise of domestic and international research institutions. A collaborative framework encompassing the entire research process will be established by linking the systems neuroscience research capabilities of the National Institute of Physiology and Research (NIHR) in Japan with the electrophysiology and model animal research technologies of DGIST and the Korea Brain Research Institute (KBRI), and the patient-derived variant analysis capabilities of the Sungkyunkwan University College of Medicine.
To this end, DGIST plans to establish the 'Global Ion Channel Innovation Research Center (GI²RC)' to expand international joint research and operate it as a global cooperation hub for fostering next-generation research personnel.
Professor Kyu-Hyung Kim of the Department of Brain Science at DGIST will serve as the research director for this study, while Deputy Director Hyun-Ho Lim of the Korea Brain Research Institute, Professor Woong-Yang Park of the Sungkyunkwan University College of Medicine, and Director Isa Tadashi of the National Institute of Physiology and Research (NIHR) in Japan will participate as co-researchers. "This project is highly significant in that it comprehensively investigates ion channel abnormalities from the molecular level to the organismal level and lays the foundation for new therapeutic technologies by integrating AI and structural biology," said Kim Kyu-hyung, a professor in the Department of Brain Science at DGIST. "We will do our utmost to lead global ion channel research by collaborating with world-class research institutions and securing core technologies for precision medicine."
Taking this project as an opportunity, DGIST plans to expand cooperation with leading overseas research institutions based on its capabilities in convergence research of brain science, structural biology, and AI, and to leap forward as a global research hub leading the study of intractable neurological diseases.
