경상북도는 6일 독도 일원에서 '독도 연안·수중 정화행사'를 개최했다고 밝혔다.
이번 행사에는 경상북도를 비롯해 울릉군, 독도경비대, 경상북도문화관광공사, 한국해양과학기술원, 울릉특수수난인명구조대, 해군 제118조기경보전대 등 관계기관과 단체 관계자 50여 명이 참여했다.
참가자들은 독도 동도 선착장에 집결해 안전교육과 장비 점검을 마친 뒤 연안과 수중으로 나뉘어 정화활동을 진행했다.
울릉특수수난인명구조대와 울릉도·독도 해양연구기지 소속 전문 다이버 10명은 약 60분 동안 독도 연안 해역에 입수해 폐어구와 폐비닐 등 바닷속에 쌓인 해양폐기물을 수거했다. 육상 참가자들은 몽돌해안 주변을 중심으로 각종 쓰레기를 수거하며 연안 환경 정비에 나섰다.
이날 수거된 해양폐기물은 울릉도와 독도 해역의 해양쓰레기 수거를 위해 운영 중인 171톤급 경상북도 해양환경정화선 '경북0726호'를 이용해 육지로 운반한 뒤 관련 절차에 따라 처리될 예정이다.
경상북도는 해양환경정화선을 활용해 해양폐기물의 수거부터 운반, 처리까지 체계적으로 관리하고, 독도 해양환경 보전 활동의 효율성을 높여 나간다는 계획이다.
또한 관계기관과 협력체계를 지속적으로 강화해 독도 연안과 수중 정화활동을 정례화하고, 해양폐기물 저감과 해양생태계 보전을 위한 관리체계를 확대해 나갈 방침이다.
최영숙 경상북도 환동해지역본부장은 "독도는 대한민국의 중요한 해양영토이자 소중한 해양생태계를 품은 공간"이라며 "민·관이 함께하는 지속적인 정화활동을 통해 깨끗한 독도 해양환경을 미래세대에 이어줄 수 있도록 환경 보전에 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했다.
