이진숙 의원은 지난 13일 ‘5·18 민주화운동의 재조명’이라는 주제로 국회에서 공개 포럼을 열었다. 포럼에서 발표된 내용이 논란이 되자, 더불어민주당은 이 의원에 대한 징계와 제명 조치 등을 공식 요구한 바 있다.

이에 달성군의회 국민의힘 의원들은 “포럼 발표자의 개별 발언까지 모두 주최 국회의원의 책임으로 몰고, 국민이 직접 선출한 대표의 직무를 정지시키는 것이 과연 민주주의 정신에 부합하는지 묻지 않을 수 없다”고 강조했다. 이어 “만약 잘못된 주장이 있다면, 사실과 근거에 따라 반박하고 검증하는 것이 옳다”고 덧붙였다.

또 “토론회란 원래 서로 다른 주장과 근거를 내세워 검증하는 자리”라며 “논쟁에는 논쟁으로, 주장에는 팩트로 대응하는 것이 진정한 민주주의”라고 목소리를 높였다.

이들은 최근 정부와 여권에서 5·18 민주화운동 정신을 헌법 전문에 포함시키려는 움직임도 언급했다. “헌법에 실릴 역사라면, 그 의미와 내용을 두고 충분한 국민적 숙의와 논의가 필요하다. 5·18은 특정 정당이나 지역만의 전유물이 아니며, 대한민국 국민 모두의 역사인 만큼 얼마든지 연구와 토론의 대상이 돼야 한다”고 주장했다.

아울러 “이번 문제가 이진숙 의원 한 사람만의 문제가 아니다”라며, “역사적·정치적 견해를 이유로 국회의원 직무를 정지시키는 선례가 만들어진다면, 앞으로 다른 정치·역사적 쟁점에도 영향을 줄 수 있다”고 우려를 표했다.

달성군의회 국민의힘 의원들은 더불어민주당에 “이 의원에 대한 제명 시도를 즉각 중단하고, 역사·정치적 의견 차이로 국회의원 직무를 정지시키려는 입법 추진 역시 멈춰야 한다”고 촉구했다. 

또 “‘정치적 책임 추궁’이라는 명분 아래, 달성군민이 선거를 통해 부여한 대표권이 가볍게 취급돼선 안 된다”며 “달성군민의 선택과 대표권을 지키기 위해 끝까지 이진숙 의원과 함께하겠다”고 밝혔다.

May 18 is not the exclusive property of a specific political party or region; as it is the history of all South Korean citizens, it should be a subject of research and debate to a great extent.”

Furthermore, stating, “This issue is not just a problem for Representative Lee Jin-sook alone,” they expressed concern, adding, “If a precedent is set where a lawmaker’s duties are suspended for historical or political views, it could influence other political and historical issues in the future.” Members of the People Power Party in the Dalseong County Council urged the Democratic Party of Korea to “immediately cease attempts to expel Assembly Member Lee and halt legislative pushes to suspend her duties as a National Assembly member due to historical and political differences.”

They also stated, “The right of representation granted by the residents of Dalseong County through elections must not be treated lightly under the pretext of ‘holding political accountability,’” adding, “We will stand with Assembly Member Lee Jin-sook to the end to protect the choice and right of representation of the Dalseong residents.”
