경북교육청은 지역 교육지원청을 중심으로 운영해 온 육상선수 발굴·육성 시스템을 통해 성장한 박시훈 선수(울산광역시청)가 2026 U20 세계육상선수권대회에서 남자 포환던지기 은메달을 차지했다고 19일 밝혔다.

박시훈 선수는 지난 6일 미국 오리건주 유진 헤이워드 필드에서 열린 대회 남자 포환던지기 결승에서 20m31을 기록하며 2위에 올랐다.

박 선수와 경북 학교체육의 인연은 초등학교 시절부터 이어졌다. 구미인덕초등학교 4학년 때 체육교사의 권유로 포환던지기를 시작한 뒤 구미인덕중학교와 금오고등학교를 거치며 전문 선수로 성장했다.

학생선수 시절 초·중·고 각급에서 한국기록을 갈아치운 박 선수는 지난해 금오고 재학 당시 20m21을 던지며 국내 고등부 선수로는 처음으로 20m를 넘어섰다.

올해는 성인용 포환으로 19m10을 기록해 한국 역대 2위 기록을 세웠으며, 지난 5월 열린 제22회 U20 아시아육상경기선수권대회에서는 20m65를 기록해 U20 남자 포환던지기 아시아기록을 경신하며 정상에 올랐다.

이번 세계선수권대회 은메달은 선수 개인의 성과를 넘어 지역 단위에서 잠재력 있는 학생선수를 발굴하고 학교급별로 성장시키는 경북교육청의 육상 육성 체계가 국제무대에서도 성과로 이어졌다는 점에서 의미가 있다는 평가다.

경북교육청은 22개 시·군 교육지원청을 기반으로 초·중학교 육상대회를 운영하고, 교육지원청 소속 육상 지도자를 통해 학생선수 지도와 학교운동부 훈련, 각종 대회 참가 등을 지원하고 있다.

초등학교 단계에서는 선수 발굴에 집중하고 중·고등학교에서는 경기력과 전문성을 높이는 방식으로 학교급 간 연계 체계를 구축해 학생선수의 지속적인 성장을 지원하고 있다.

이 같은 육성 방식은 국내 대회에서도 성과를 내고 있다.

제54회 전국소년체육대회 육상에서 금메달 9개와 은메달 5개, 동메달 10개 등 모두 24개의 메달을 획득했으며, 제55회 대회에서는 금메달 11개, 은메달 13개, 동메달 9개 등 총 33개의 메달을 따내며 최다 금메달과 최다 메달을 기록했다.

특히 제55회 전국소년체육대회 여자 15세 이하부 4×400m 계주에서는 부별 한국신기록을 세우며 경북 육상의 경쟁력을 입증했다.

전국체육대회에서도 제100회부터 제106회까지 18세 이하부 육상 종목에서 5차례 연속 종합 1위를 차지하며 학생 육상 분야에서 꾸준한 성적을 이어가고 있다.

경북교육청은 박 선수의 사례를 지역 학교에서 발견한 재능이 교육지원청과 지도자, 학교 및 지역사회의 연계 지원을 통해 국제무대까지 성장한 대표적인 사례로 보고 있다.

임종식 경북교육감은 “경북 학교체육에서 꿈을 키운 박시훈 선수가 세계선수권대회에서 좋은 성과를 거둬 매우 뜻깊게 생각한다”며 “이번 결과는 선수의 노력뿐만 아니라 교육지원청을 중심으로 한 발굴·육성 체계와 학교, 지도자, 지역사회의 협력이 함께 만들어낸 결실”이라고 말했다.

이어 “앞으로도 지역별 학생선수 발굴과 육성 기반을 더욱 촘촘하게 구축해 학생들이 자신의 가능성을 충분히 펼치고 세계적인 선수로 성장할 수 있도록 학교체육 지원을 강화하겠다”고 밝혔다.

At the 55th festival, they secured a total of 33 medals, including 11 gold, 13 silver, and 9 bronze, setting records for the most gold medals and the most medals won in total.

In particular, the competitiveness of Gyeongbuk track and field was proven by setting a new Korean national record in the girls' under-15 4x400m relay at the 55th National Junior Sports Festival.
