North Gyeongsang Province is launching swift and fundamental disaster recovery work by investing a large budget into local rivers that suffered significant damage from the heavy rainfall that occurred last month.
The province announced that it has finalized a recovery plan totaling 16.2 billion won for nine local rivers within its jurisdiction, including those in Andong City and Uiseong County, which suffered erosion and damage from the heavy rains in mid-July, and is moving forward with full-scale project implementation.
This recovery plan was formulated based on meticulous on-site inspections by the Central Joint Damage Investigation Team. The allocated budget for major affected areas includes 14.3 billion won for four rivers in Andong City and 1.7 billion won for three rivers in Uiseong County. Based on the finalized funding structure, the province plans to promptly complete administrative procedures and accelerate on-site construction. North Gyeongsang Province has decided to move away from a simple restoration approach for sections where river facilities, such as embankments and revetments, were damaged. The province plans to introduce a permanent restoration method that significantly enhances disaster response capabilities by analyzing the root causes of the damage and hydrological conditions from various angles.
In fact, analysis revealed that the damage from the recent heavy rainfall was concentrated in unmaintained sections where previous river maintenance projects had not yet been carried out. Accordingly, the province plans to meticulously review site-specific risk factors starting from the initial detailed design stage and actively incorporate strengthened disaster prevention infrastructure into the design plan. Furthermore, the province intends to swiftly alleviate the anxiety of local residents by promptly completing essential administrative procedures, such as the preliminary review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
North Gyeongsang Governor Lee Cheol-woo stated, "We will ensure the daily safety of residents and thoroughly prevent additional secondary damage through the rapid restoration of local rivers damaged by heavy rainfall." He added, "We will not stop at simple facility restoration but will create a safer and more permanent river environment capable of responding to climate change."
