Daegu Selects 74 Companies for Startup City Project… Supporting Attraction and Settlement of Out-of-Region Companies
Daegu City has selected 74 companies to participate in the ‘2026 Startup City Project’ and is moving forward to support the growth of local startups and attract excellent companies from outside the region.
Daegu City announced that, together with the Daegu Creative Economy Innovation Center, it began recruiting participating companies last June, conducted evaluations in July, and finalized the 74 companies selected for support this month.
In this recruitment, companies based outside of Daegu accounted for 35% of the total applicants. In particular, the New Industry sector of the Regional Startup Package showed high interest, recording a competition rate of over 15 to 1.
The selected companies consist of 18 early-stage companies and 14 growth companies under the Investment-Linked Startup Package, as well as 26 companies in the New Industry sector and 16 in the General sector of the Regional Startup Package.
Daegu City will provide differentiated commercialization funding based on the companies' growth stage and business sectors. For the Investment-Linked Startup Package, up to 80 million won is provided to early-stage companies, and up to 150 million won to growth-stage companies.
The Regional Startup Package plans to provide commercialization funds of up to 400 million won to companies in new industries and up to 250 million won to companies in general sectors.
Along with financial support, customized programs tailored to each company's growth stage and needs will also be operated. The plan is to support corporate growth by linking support programs across 11 fields, including talent development, technology support, commercialization, investment linkage, open innovation, regional linkage, business advancement, and overseas expansion.
Daegu City is focusing on supporting the entire corporate growth process—going beyond simple initial funding to include technology development, investment attraction, sales channel expansion, and entry into overseas markets.
In particular, support is also being provided to help companies relocating from outside Daegu or newly entering the region settle in the area. For companies located outside the region, the plan is to provide monthly rent subsidies of 400,000 won for up to six months through a housing support program, and to offer support tailored to the specific needs of each company by collaborating with local universities, research institutes, and startup support organizations.
The Startup City Project is an initiative launched for the first time this year by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Its goal is to spread startup-related resources and capabilities, currently concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, to regional areas and to establish a self-sustaining, region-centered startup ecosystem.
Taking this project as an opportunity, Daegu City plans to support the growth of local startups while simultaneously attracting promising companies from other regions to expand the foundation for startups, creating a virtuous cycle of businesses, talent, technology, and investment.
Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, "The challenges and growth of startups are crucial factors determining the region's future competitiveness," adding, "We will expand environments suitable for business activities and provide practical support so that not only Daegu companies but also promising startups nationwide can find new opportunities and grow." He added, “We will enhance the competitiveness of the startup ecosystem by creating a virtuous cycle where the growth of startups leads to job creation and increased investment, which in turn supports the development of local industries.”
