Gumi City to Challenge for 'Leading Region for Educational Innovation' Designation… Launch of Council of 18 Institutions

Gumi City, North Gyeongsang Province, is establishing an educational model linked to its region's specialized industries and is officially launching the Ministry of Education's 'Leading Region for Educational Innovation' competition.

Gumi City announced on the 26th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the 'Gumi Educational Innovation Council' at the City Hall conference room. Representatives from 18 institutions, including the Gumi City Council, the Gumi Office of Education, local universities, the Association of Elementary, Middle, and High School Principals, the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, and corporate councils, attended the signing ceremony.

This agreement was established to build an organic cooperative system among the education, administration, and industry sectors to discover region-specific educational resources and to lay the foundation for a virtuous cycle that extends from talent development to career guidance, employment, and local settlement.

The newly launched Gumi Educational Innovation Council plans to focus on developing specialized, practice-oriented educational courses linked to Gumi's core industries: the semiconductor specialized complex and the defense industry cluster. The plan is to reduce the educational gap and cultivate talent that meets the demands of local industries through this initiative.

If finally designated as a ‘Leading Region for Educational Innovation’ by the Ministry of Education, the city will receive a total of 10 billion won in state funding (special grants) over five years, from 2027 to 2031, with a maximum of 2 billion won allocated annually.

Leveraging the strengths of its education system combined with the infrastructure of its national industrial complex, Gumi City plans to submit an operational plan by September 30 and concentrate its administrative efforts on securing final designation this coming November.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, "Education is a key factor determining a region's future competitiveness," adding, "We will strengthen collaboration with educational institutions, universities, and businesses to create an educational innovation ecosystem where students can grow and settle within the region."
