국민의힘이 정기국회를 앞두고 개최한 의원 연찬회에 박근혜 전 대통령을 초청해 특강을 듣는 이례적인 행보를 보였다. 박 전 대통령이 보수정당 연찬회 단상에 선 것은 2012년 새누리당 대선 후보 시절 이후 무려 14년 만이다.

소수 야당으로 몰린 당의 처지를 “애벌레가 나비가 되는 과정”에 비유하며 지도부를 중심의 단결과 동지애를 당부한 박 전 대통령의 메시지를 두고, 정치권과 우리 사회의 시선은 냉담함과 당내 분열로 교차하고 있다.  

"내부의 적이 더 무섭다" 강조했지만… 설득력 잃은 '구시대적' 메시지

박 전 대통령은 약 20분간 이어진 연설에서 "밖의 적을 상대로 싸울 때 우리 내부의 분열만큼 무서운 적은 없다", "무신불립(無信不立·신뢰 없이 설 수 없다)"이라며 당내 결속을 강력히 주문했다. 또 "호랑이 줄무늬는 밖에 있지만, 사람의 줄무늬는 안에 있다"는 비유를 들며 당내 신의를 강조했다.  

그러나 이러한 메시지가 대다수 국민에게 얼마나 설득력 있게 다가갈지는 의문이다. 박 전 대통령의 메시지는 당의 가치나 철학, 미래 비전, 국민 삶을 개선할 정책적 대안에 대한 고민보다는 지지층 결집과 당권 단속이라는 전형적인 '진영 논리'와 '내부 결속'에만 매몰되어 있기 때문이다.

헌정사상 최초로 탄핵 파면된 전직 대통령이 정치적 쇄신이나 반성 없이 ‘외부의 적’과 ‘배신’을 운운하며 단합을 외치는 모습은, 여전히 과거의 프레임과 온정주의에 갇혀 있는 보수정당의 현주소를 고스란히 보여준다. 민생 고통과 사회적 갈등 속에서 당의 정체성, 이념, 정치적 염치와 철학이 현실과 크게 괴리되어 있다는 지적이 나오는 이유다.

정치권과 시민 사회의 반응은 매우 냉소적이다. 더불어민주당과 조국혁신당 등 야권은 "헌정 질서와 촛불 민주주의에 대한 모욕"이라고 강하게 비판했다. 조국혁신당은 "사법적·정치적 심판을 받은 전직 대통령을 다시 소환하는 것은 한국 정치의 수준을 후퇴시키는 행위"라며 국민의 눈높이에 맞지 않는 과거 퇴행적 행보라고 포화에 나섰다.  

중도층과 일반 국민 사이에서는 '국민의힘이 여전히 박근혜 그림자에서 벗어나지 못했다'는 평가가 지배적이다. 쇄신과 인적 쇄신, 미래 비전을 보여줘야 할 연찬회에서 전직 대통령을 앞세운 이벤트에 의존하는 모습은 여당의 실정을 견제해야 할 야당으로서의 존재감을 스스로 깎아먹는 결과를 초래하고 있다.

국민의힘 내부에서도 박 전 대통령의 등장과 메시지를 두고 이견이 많다. 아전인수식 해석과 여전한 ‘배신자론’에 지역 정치권에서조차 박 전 대통령의 출현과 메시지는 국내 정치는 물론 작금의 국민의힘에도 전혀 어울리지 않는 엉뚱한 답안지라는 주장도 나온다.  

실제, 지도부와 친윤계 의원들은 "보수 결집의 계기가 됐다", "지도부를 중심으로 뭉치자는 당부가 와닿았다"며 환영의 뜻을 표하면서 박 전 대통령의 메시지를 장동혁 대표 체제에 힘을 실어주는 명분으로 활용하려는 기류가 강하다.  

반면 일각에서는 박 전 대통령의 "사람의 줄무늬(배신)" 발언을 두고 서로를 향해 손가락질하는 아전인수식 해석이 난무하고 있다. 친박계와 구주류는 유승민 전 의원 등 과거 탄핵 찬성파나 한동훈 전 대표 등을 겨냥한 발언이라고 해석하는 반면, 계파 간 서로를 '배신자'로 몰아붙이며 헐뜯는 소모적 논쟁이 다시 재발했다. 

결국 한 3선 의원의 지적처럼 "(박 전 대통령이)내부 분열이 무서운 적이라며 통합을 강조했지만, 의원들은 각자의 시각에서 서로를 향해 '배신자'라고 따지고 들며 싸우는 꼴“만 연출됐다.  

박근혜의 등판은 국민의힘에 단기적으로는 골수 보수 지지층을 결집하는 효과를 줄 수 있겠지만, 장기적으로는 중도층 확장 차단과 당내 갈등 고착화라는 치명적인 약점으로 작용할 가능성이 크다.

국민의힘이 나아갈 길은 과거의 상처와 특정 정치인에 대한 향수에 의존하는 것이 아니라, 무너진 정치적 염치와 이념적 정체성을 바로 세우고 미래지향적 민생 대안을 제시하는 데 있다.

그러나, 탄핵당한 대통령이 다시금 정치판에 얼굴을 내밀면서 중도층으로의 외연 확대를 꿈꿔야 할 국민의힘으로서는 그 길목이 이제는 완전히 차단되는 결과만 낳았다.또한, 국민의힘이 진정한 체질 개선과 쇄신으로 나아가기보다는 여전히 과거의 굴레와 내부 계파 싸움에서 헤어나오지 못하고 있음을 역설적으로 증명하는 현장이었다.

The sight of the first former president in constitutional history to be impeached and removed from office calling for unity while citing "external enemies" and "betrayal" without any political reform or self-reflection clearly reveals the current state of the conservative party, which remains trapped in the frameworks of the past and paternalism. This is why criticism is emerging that the party's identity, ideology, political integrity, and philosophy are significantly detached from reality amidst the suffering of the people and social conflict.

Reactions from Social and Political Spheres: "Insult to the Candlelight Movement and the People" vs. "Rallying Supporters"

Reactions from the political sphere and civil society are highly cynical. The opposition bloc, including the Democratic Party of Korea and the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, strongly criticized the move as an "insult to the constitutional order and Candlelight democracy." The Cho Kuk Innovation Party launched a barrage of attacks, stating that "recalling a former president who has already faced judicial and political judgment is an act that sets back the level of Korean politics," and labeling it a regressive move that fails to meet the public's expectations.

Among centrists and the general public, the dominant assessment is that the People Power Party has still not escaped the shadow of Park Geun-hye. Relying on an event featuring a former president at a workshop that should have demonstrated reform, personnel changes, and a future vision is undermining the party's own standing as an opposition party tasked with checking the ruling party's mismanagement.

Even within the People Power Party, there are significant disagreements regarding former President Park’s appearance and message. Amid self-serving interpretations and persistent "traitor theories," claims are emerging even within local political circles that Park’s appearance and message are completely irrelevant and unsuitable for domestic politics, let alone the current state of the People Power Party.

In fact, the leadership and pro-Yoon faction lawmakers have expressed their welcome, stating that it "served as an opportunity for conservative unity" and that "her plea to unite around the leadership resonated deeply." There is a strong trend among them to utilize Park’s message as justification to lend strength to Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk’s leadership.

On the other hand, self-serving interpretations are rampant in some quarters regarding former President Park’s remark about "human stripes (betrayal)," with people pointing fingers at one another. While the pro-Park faction and the old guard interpreted the remarks as targeting former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min and other pro-impeachment supporters, as well as former party leader Han Dong-hoon, the wasteful debate between factions, in which they slandered each other by branding one another as "traitors," has resurfaced.

Ultimately, as pointed out by a three-term lawmaker, "(Former President Park) emphasized unity, stating that internal division is a fearsome enemy, but the situation merely unfolded as lawmakers fought, arguing and labeling each other 'traitors' from their own perspectives."

While Park Geun-hye's return may have the short-term effect of rallying the die-hard conservative support base for the People Power Party, it is highly likely to act as a fatal weakness in the long run, blocking the expansion of the centrist electorate and entrenching internal party conflicts.

The path forward for the People Power Party lies not in relying on past wounds or nostalgia for specific politicians, but in restoring its shattered political decency and ideological identity while presenting future-oriented alternatives for the people's livelihood. However, for the People Power Party, which should have been dreaming of expanding its base to the moderate electorate as the impeached president reappeared in politics, this resulted only in the complete blockage of that path. Furthermore, it was a scene that ironically proved that the People Power Party is still unable to break free from the shackles of the past and internal factional infighting, rather than moving toward genuine structural reform and renewal.
