포항시는 아시아태평양이론물리센터(APCTP)와 함께 프랑스 국립과학연구센터(CNRS) 본원 등 현지 주요 연구기관을 방문해 공동연구 확대와 연구협력 기반 구축 방안을 논의했다고 밝혔다.

이번 방문은 지난 6월 일본 도쿄에 위치한 CNRS 동북아사무소를 찾은 데 이은 후속 일정이다. 당시 논의됐던 APCTP와 CNRS 간 연구협력센터 및 CNRS 한국 연락사무소 구축 가능성을 프랑스 본원 및 현지 연구기관과의 협의를 통해 구체화하는 데 초점이 맞춰졌다.

방문단은 소르본대학교 응집물질이론물리연구소(LPTMC)를 시작으로 CNRS 본원, 에콜 폴리테크니크 통계물리연구소(LPMC), 파리-사클레대학교 이론물리·통계물리연구소(LPTMS) 등을 차례로 방문했다.

각 기관에서는 국제 공동연구를 확대하는 방안과 연구자 간 교류 활성화, 공동 워크숍 및 학술행사 추진 등에 대한 의견을 교환했다. 포항에 연구협력 거점을 마련하는 방안도 주요 논의 대상에 포함됐다.

특히 지난 27일 방문한 CNRS 본원에서는 기존 협력 관계를 바탕으로 공동연구의 범위를 넓히고 장기적인 협력체계를 구축하는 방안이 집중적으로 논의됐다. 양측은 공동연구 프로젝트와 연구자 교류를 단계적으로 확대하는 데 의견을 같이했으며, CNRS의 국제협력 프로그램과 연계한 연구 거점 마련을 위해 후속 협의를 이어가기로 했다.

포항시는 이번 협의 과정에서 지역에 집적된 과학기술 연구 기반을 적극적으로 소개했다. APCTP를 비롯해 POSTECH과 포항가속기연구소(PAL) 등 연구 인프라를 활용하면 해외 연구기관과의 공동연구를 확대할 수 있다는 점을 설명했다.

또 APCTP가 구축한 아시아·태평양 지역 연구 네트워크와 CNRS를 비롯한 프랑스 연구기관의 국제 연구역량을 결합해 포항을 유럽과 아시아·태평양을 연결하는 공동연구 플랫폼으로 발전시킬 수 있다는 구상도 제시했다.

포항시 관계자는 “지난 도쿄 방문이 CNRS와의 협력 가능성을 확인하는 과정이었다면 이번에는 본원과 프랑스 현지 연구기관을 직접 찾아 구체적인 협력모델을 논의했다”며 “APCTP와 함께 공동연구와 연구자 교류를 실질적으로 확대하고, 포항이 국제 기초과학 협력의 중심지로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 단계적인 기반을 마련하겠다”고 말했다.

한편 CNRS는 물리학을 비롯한 다양한 학문 분야에서 연구를 수행하는 프랑스의 대표적인 국립 연구기관으로, 대학 및 연구기관과 공동연구 조직을 운영하며 국제적인 연구협력을 이어가고 있다.

APCTP는 1996년 설립된 국제이론물리 연구기관으로 포항에 본부를 두고 있으며, 아시아·태평양 지역을 중심으로 연구자와 기관 간 학술교류 및 공동연구를 추진하고 있다.

This visit is a follow-up to the visit to the CNRS Northeast Asia Office in Tokyo, Japan, last June. The focus was on concretizing the possibility of establishing a research cooperation center between APCTP and CNRS, as well as a CNRS liaison office in Korea, which were discussed at that time, through consultations with the French headquarters and local research institutions. The delegation visited the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Condensed Matter (LPTMC) at the Sorbonne University, followed by the CNRS headquarters, the Institute of Statistical Physics at the École Polytechnique (LPMC), and the Institute of Theoretical and Statistical Physics at the University of Paris-Saclay (LPTMS).

At each institution, opinions were exchanged regarding ways to expand international joint research, promote exchanges among researchers, and organize joint workshops and academic events. Establishing a research cooperation base in Pohang was also a major topic of discussion.

In particular, at the CNRS headquarters visited on the 27th, intensive discussions were held on expanding the scope of joint research based on existing cooperative relationships and establishing a long-term cooperation framework. Both sides agreed to gradually expand joint research projects and researcher exchanges, and decided to continue follow-up consultations to establish a research base linked to the CNRS's international cooperation programs.

During these consultations, Pohang City actively introduced the region's concentrated scientific and technological research infrastructure. It was explained that utilizing research infrastructure, including APCTP, POSTECH, and the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), can expand joint research with overseas research institutions.

In addition, a vision was presented to develop Pohang into a joint research platform connecting Europe and the Asia-Pacific region by combining the Asia-Pacific research network established by APCTP with the international research capabilities of French research institutions, including the CNRS.

A Pohang City official stated, "While the previous visit to Tokyo was a process to confirm the potential for cooperation with the CNRS, this time we visited the headquarters and local French research institutions in person to discuss concrete cooperation models." The official added, "We will practically expand joint research and researcher exchanges together with APCTP and lay a step-by-step foundation so that Pohang can establish itself as a hub for international basic science cooperation."
