Pohang Yeongil Bay Special Tourism Zone Seeks Shift from ‘Day Trips’ to Stay-Type Tourism

Pohang City and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province are organizing a forum to explore ways to revitalize stay-type tourism in the Yeongil Bay Special Tourism Zone.

The two organizations will hold the ‘2026 Yeongil Bay Special Tourism Zone Revitalization Forum’ at the Lahan Hotel on September 2 to discuss tourism policy directions aimed at extending tourists’ length of stay and connecting this to accommodation and local consumption.

Held under the theme ‘Yeongil Bay, the Beginning of Stay-Type Tourism,’ the forum will focus on connecting Pohang’s existing tourism resources into a single travel itinerary rather than developing individual tourist sites.

The forum plans to intensively examine strategies to encourage tourists to stay for at least one night by linking major tourist attractions such as Yeongildae Beach, Hwanho Park, Space Walk, Songdo Beach, Pohang Canal, and Jukdo Market, and by combining marine tourism, nightlife content, gourmet dining, local commercial districts, as well as cruise and MICE industries. Professor Shin Hoon-kyu of the Department of Physics at POSTECH will deliver the keynote address. Professor Shin plans to discuss the elements that maritime cities must possess to encourage tourist stays and the structure through which tourist spending contributes to the local economy.

In particular, noting the difference between simply increasing the number of tourists and expanding actual tourism revenue, he will propose methods for efficiently utilizing existing tourism resources, continuous facility management, phased investment, and the necessity of public-private cooperation.

Thematic presentations will follow.

Professor Shim Kyu-jin of the Institute for Creative Convergence Education at Handong University will present strategies to sustain night tourism demand, which is currently concentrated during festivals, even during normal times. The main content involves guiding festival visitors to local restaurants, cafes, and accommodations, thereby linking night tourism to local consumption and lodging.

Professor Kim Jong-nam of the Department of Global Hotel & Cruise at Daekyung University will present itineraries for different demographics with varying travel purposes and characteristics, such as cruise tourists, international conference attendees, corporate incentive travelers, and inspection teams from the industrial and scientific sectors. Along with customized tour courses departing from Yeongilman Port and traveling to downtown Pohang, the forum will also cover operational measures that tourists actually need during their journey, such as multilingual guidance for foreign visitors and transportation and payment systems.

Following the presentations, Professor Shim Kyu-jin will chair a comprehensive discussion. Participants in the discussion will include officials from Pohang City's tourism industry, the Pohang Yeongilman Tourism Special Zone Council, the Pohang Tourism & MICE Association, and the Songdo Shopping District Prosperity Association.

The discussion is expected to cover topics such as the reasons why tourists do not stay overnight in Pohang, night tourism content connecting Songdo and Yeongildae, strategies to attract festival visitors to local commercial districts, and the development of multi-night tourism packages targeting MICE participants.

The forum places greater emphasis on how to connect and operate existing tourism resources rather than focusing on creating new tourism facilities. The core objective is to efficiently organize tourist routes to extend their length of stay and expand accommodation and local consumption.

Not only tourism industry officials but also citizens interested in the future development of the Yeongilman Tourism Special Zone can attend the forum to observe the relevant discussions.
