POSCO University Student Volunteer Corps ‘Beyond 19th Cohort’ Concludes Activities… Communicating with Children at Home and Abroad Through Engineering
The 19th cohort of POSCO’s university student volunteer corps, ‘Beyond,’ has concluded its three-month journey after completing educational and cultural volunteer activities centered on engineering.
POSCO announced that the 19th cohort of Beyond held an activity presentation at the POSCO Center in Seoul on the 28th to share the achievements of the engineering education and domestic and international volunteer activities they had conducted.
Beyond is a university student volunteer corps operating under the motto of "moving beyond current limitations toward a broader future." Since its launch in 2007, the corps has engaged with local communities by having university students directly plan and execute programs, carrying out various activities aimed at solving educational, environmental, and social issues.
This year, the activities of the 19th cohort were conducted intensively during the summer vacation. Starting with an inauguration ceremony last June, the members participated in engineering education and maker activities to enhance their relevant capabilities, and then personally developed educational engineering kits and content.
Divided into five groups, the members selected Electronics and Circuits, Physics and Machinery, and Physical AI as their main themes and developed experiential educational programs utilizing various technologies such as ultrasonic sensors, machine learning, and mechanical structures. A key feature of these programs is that they go beyond simply explaining technical principles; they are designed to allow children to experience them firsthand by connecting them to real-life examples involving AI, sensors, physical movement, and safety.
The developed content has been utilized in educational volunteer sites both domestically and internationally.
Last July, the members visited the Incheon Songdo Regional Children's Center and provided engineering education to 63 children. Using self-made kits, the members explained the operating principles of science and technology and their practical applications, conducting programs that allowed the children to experience them directly.
In August, they visited the Phu My region in southern Vietnam to conduct overseas educational volunteering for 250 local elementary school students. Along with experiential engineering education, they also carried out activities to improve the educational environment, such as painting murals on school walls and creating flowerbeds.
Programs for cultural exchange between Korean and Vietnamese students were also organized. The Beyond members spent time naturally mingling with local students while performing K-POP dances and making traditional fans.
Seven Vietnamese university students selected as Global Excellence University Scholars by the POSCO Chungam Foundation also participated in this volunteer activity in Vietnam. University students from both countries shared the meaning of education and service while jointly operating engineering education and cultural exchange programs.
Kim Sang-hak, a member of the 19th Beyond cohort who participated in the activity, said, “I learned the importance of communication and education while conveying engineering principles in a way that children could easily understand,” adding, “I felt that even a short experience can create new interests and possibilities for the children.”
He further added, “Through direct interaction with Vietnamese students, I experienced that engineering can play a role in connecting people and cultures, going beyond merely being a means of transmitting technology.”
A local Vietnamese university student also stated, “As a student who has received support from the POSCO Chungam Foundation, I wanted to give back to society the help I have received,” adding, “It was meaningful to be able to put my gratitude into practice through service via this activity.”
**Beyond** members spent time naturally mingling with local students while conducting activities such as K-POP dance performances and traditional fan making. POSCO plans to continue educational and cultural sharing activities centered on the university student volunteer group Beyond to expand educational opportunities for future generations and grow together with the local community.
