POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa Proposes Expanded Cooperation on Critical Mineral Supply Chains in Australia

POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa attended discussions on Korea-Australia economic cooperation held in Australia and proposed that the two countries expand cooperation in resource sectors, including critical minerals, and enhance supply chain competitiveness.

Chairman Jang attended the 47th Annual Joint Meeting of the Korea-Australia Economic Cooperation Committee (AKBC), held in Adelaide, Australia, on the 2nd, as the Korean Chairman. The event was attended by approximately 200 officials from the political and business sectors of both countries, including Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell, and AKBC Chairman Martin Ferguson.

Established in 1979, the AKBC is a private economic cooperation channel where business and government officials from both countries have discussed pending economic issues and expanded the foundation for cooperation. As this year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Australia, participants agreed on the need to further expand the scope of economic cooperation to respond to the restructuring of global supply chains and changes in the industrial environment.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Jang identified critical minerals as a key sector capable of advancing industrial cooperation between the two countries to the next level. He emphasized that combining Australia’s abundant natural resources with Korea’s advanced technologies, such as smelting and processing, could establish a stable supply chain and create new business opportunities.

He also mentioned the need to expand cooperation in the energy sector. The plan envisions strengthening the foundation for energy cooperation between the two nations by enhancing the stability of the natural gas supply chain while expanding joint projects in the renewable energy sector. Furthermore, he suggested broadening areas of cooperation to include advanced industries such as defense, space, and research and development (R&D) in the future.

During the meeting, cooperation strategies between companies from both countries were discussed, focusing on steel, secondary battery materials, critical minerals, as well as innovation, R&D, energy transition, and decarbonization.

POSCO Group introduced the research and business activities of the Australian Critical Resources Laboratory, explaining that the partnership between the two countries should evolve beyond simply securing raw materials to include technological cooperation in the resource sector. POSCO International also noted that the energy cooperation model between the two nations is evolving, with the expansion of existing energy resource-centric collaboration into renewable energy businesses.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Jang identified critical minerals as a key area capable of taking industrial cooperation between the two nations to the next level. Prior to the meeting, Chairman Chang met successively with key Australian government officials to request cooperation regarding POSCO Group’s local business operations.

During separate meetings with Australian Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres and Minister for Trade and Tourism Don Farrell on the 1st, Chairman Chang emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in the resource sector and urged the Australian government to show interest and support to ensure the stable progress of POSCO Group’s steel, lithium, and energy businesses currently underway in the region. He also met with a delegation led by Kathleen Conlon, Chair of Pilbara Minerals, to discuss ways to expand cooperation, focusing on the lithium business.

This move aligns with POSCO Group’s so-called "Triple Core" strategy. POSCO Group has established industrial resources centered on steel, strategic resources such as lithium, and energy resources as its main business pillars, linking competitiveness in the resource sector to business expansion. Australia is a key partner country, currently accounting for approximately 70% of POSCO Group’s raw material procurement.

Cooperation between POSCO Group and Australia has expanded its scope from steel to secondary battery materials and the energy sector. POSCO Group began long-term purchasing of Australian iron ore in 1971 and has imported over 1.5 billion tons of raw materials to date. In 2010, it also participated in the development of the Roy Hill iron ore mine from the early stages.

In the secondary battery materials sector, it operates a lithium hydroxide production plant in the Yulchon Industrial Complex in South Jeolla Province through a joint venture with Pilbara Minerals. This year, it also secured a stake in a lithium mine owned by Mineral Resources.

In the energy sector, following its acquisition of Australia's Senex Energy in 2022, the company is strengthening its foundation for local resource businesses by expanding its natural gas operations.
