SEMICON Taiwan

Gumi Mayor Heads to Taiwan and Germany… Wide-ranging Activities from Expanding Semiconductor Sales Channels to City Diplomacy

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho is embarking on an overseas trip connecting Taiwan and Germany to support local semiconductor companies' entry into overseas markets, expand international exchanges, and formulate urban development strategies utilizing industrial heritage.

The city of Gumi announced that a delegation led by Mayor Kim Jang-ho will visit Taiwan and Germany from the 3rd to the 9th for a 4-night, 7-day itinerary.

This trip focuses on expanding overseas sales channels for high-tech industries, including semiconductors, the region's key industry. In addition, the trip adds significance to international exchange by expanding inter-city exchanges to mark the 10th anniversary of the friendship agreement with Taoyuan City, and by commemorating the dedication of Korean nurses dispatched to Germany on the 60th anniversary of their service.

The delegation will first visit ‘SEMICON Taiwan 2026,’ a world-class semiconductor exhibition held in Taipei, Taiwan. On the 4th, at the exhibition held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center (TaiNEX), the delegation plans to visit the booths of six local companies, including Wonik QnC and CMTX, to encourage the participating firms and examine firsthand the latest technologies in the semiconductor sector and global market trends.

SEMICON Taiwan is an international specialized semiconductor exhibition held since 1995. This year's event is expected to feature over 1,300 companies from 65 countries operating approximately 4,300 booths. More than 100,000 visitors are also projected to attend.

Along with attending the exhibition, Gumi City will dispatch a trade delegation to the site to support companies in expanding their export markets. The city plans to facilitate practical business opportunities by conducting one-on-one export consultations between local companies and Taiwanese buyers, as well as through joint exhibition visits.

A meeting with business leaders is also scheduled. The city intends to directly listen to the difficulties and on-site demands faced by companies during the process of entering overseas markets and to reflect these in future corporate support policies. Exchange with Taoyuan City, a hub for Taiwan’s high-tech industries, aviation, and logistics, is also a key part of the itinerary. After viewing a special exhibition commemorating the 10th anniversary of the friendship between the two cities, the delegation plans to meet with Taoyuan Mayor Zhang Shanzheng to discuss ways to expand exchanges across various fields, including industry, culture, and the arts.

In Germany, the delegation will reflect on the significance of history and exchange. On the 5th, the delegation will attend the ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Korean nurses dispatched to Germany to honor the sacrifices and contributions of these nurses who played a crucial role in the country's economic growth.

Mayor Kim Jang-ho will deliver a congratulatory speech expressing his gratitude, and the Gumi City Saemaul Women's Choir will present a tribute and special performance to convey their respect and honor to the nurses.

The itinerary also includes an on-site examination of industrial city regeneration cases in Germany. The delegation will visit sites of urban transformation in the Rhine-Ruhr region, including Essen, to investigate examples of how former industrial facilities and heritage have been converted into cultural and tourism resources. Through this initiative, Gumi City is exploring ways to reconfigure its existing urban spaces, which are centered on industrial facilities, into areas that combine culture, tourism, and content. Furthermore, the city plans to incorporate advanced overseas practices into its future strategy for creating a Gumi-style cultural industrial complex.

Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, “Through this visit to Taiwan and Germany, we will expand the foundation for international cooperation in the high-tech sector and provide substantial support for local companies’ entry into overseas markets.” He added, “We will broaden exchanges with our sister cities into various fields such as industry and culture, reflect on the history of Korean workers dispatched to Germany, and actively utilize Germany’s urban transformation case studies for the innovation of Gumi’s industrial spaces and the creation of cultural industrial complexes.”
