POSCO Partners with BHP to Accelerate Commercialization of Hydrogen Reduced Steelmaking… Expanding Global Raw Material Cooperation

POSCO is accelerating the steel industry's transition to decarbonization by partnering with BHP, one of Australia's largest mining companies, to commercialize hydrogen reduced steelmaking technology.

POSCO announced on the 3rd that it signed the "HyREX Collaboration Agreement" with BHP at Cheongsongdae in Pohang and agreed to jointly pursue the verification of commercial technology for "HyREX," a hydrogen reduced steelmaking process.

Under this agreement, POSCO will verify the process performance and stability of HyREX under actual raw material conditions using iron ore supplied by BHP. The company plans to secure raw material conditions suitable for commercialization by verifying how process efficiency varies depending on the characteristics and quality of the iron ore.

HyREX is POSCO's hydrogen reduced steelmaking technology that produces steel using hydrogen as a reducing agent instead of coal. As one of the core technologies for reducing carbon emissions generated during the existing blast furnace-centered steel production process, POSCO is proceeding with technology development and demonstration for commercialization in stages. Through this collaboration, BHP will also be able to verify how the iron ore it produces can be utilized in next-generation low-carbon steelmaking processes. During the technology verification process, both companies plan to share information regarding raw materials required for hydrogen reduction steelmaking and jointly review measures to reduce Scope 3 carbon emissions generated during the iron ore supply chain.

This agreement is also significant in that it develops the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between POSCO and BHP last October into a concrete cooperative project. Following the confirmation of their commitment to cooperation in the presence of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanage and POSCO Group Chairman Jang In-hwa, the partnership has now been expanded to the research and development stage.

With this agreement as a catalyst, POSCO plans to further strengthen global cooperation in the fields of raw material supply chains and technology development. In particular, following the initiation of technology cooperation regarding hydrogen reduction steelmaking with engineering firm Primetals in 2024, POSCO is expanding the development of decarbonization technologies through open collaboration by now engaging in technology verification with global raw material supplier BHP.

At the signing ceremony, Eom Kyung-keun, Head of POSCO's R&D Center, stated, "This collaboration is significant in that a steel producer and a global raw material supplier are joining forces from the technology development stage to achieve the common goal of low-carbon steelmaking." He added, "We will accelerate the development of low-carbon steelmaking technologies by continuously expanding the scope of cooperation with global raw material suppliers, including BHP."

Ben Ellis, Vice President of Marketing and Sustainability at BHP, said, "This project is an extension of the long-standing cooperation with POSCO in the field of steelmaking technology." He added, "We will jointly develop new technologies and pathways to support the decarbonization of our customers' steelmaking processes and contribute to ensuring that Australian iron ore can be utilized in future low-carbon steelmaking processes." POSCO plans to continue expanding collaboration with various partners, including global raw material suppliers and technology companies, to enhance the sophistication of HyREX technology and accelerate the establishment of a decarbonized production system linked to the global supply chain.
