The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships concluded its 13-day run with a closing ceremony on the 3rd. Athletes from around the world, ranging in age from 35 to 106, traversed Daegu's tracks and fields, setting 17 new world records and 50 new competition records, once again proving Daegu's status as an international athletics city.
The event, which opened on the 21st of last month, commenced in earnest on the 22nd, featuring fierce competition across 34 disciplines including track, field, and road events. As athletes of various age groups challenged their limits, the competition transcended mere record-breaking and served as a sports festival that crossed generations and borders.
In particular, Sawang Janpram of Thailand, a 106-year-old participant and the oldest competitor, created iconic moments of the event by setting new world records in both the discus and javelin throws.
The performance of Korean athletes was also outstanding. South Korea won a total of 74 medals, including 27 gold, 21 silver, and 26 bronze. In terms of medals by country, the United States won the most with 226, followed by Australia with 172 and Japan with 158.
Daegu City and the Organizing Committee also devoted considerable effort to the safety and convenience of athletes during the competition. Medical support was provided to a total of 237 people at the stadium infirmaries, 30 of whom were transferred to hospitals. No critically ill patients were reported.
In the transportation sector, 11 shuttle routes were operated and used by over 18,000 people, and the cumulative usage of free transportation cards exceeded 50,000. 675 people made reservations for tourism programs designed to allow athletes and their companions to visit tourist attractions in Daegu.
To support the competition, approximately 500 referees and operational staff, along with 844 volunteers, were active throughout the site, and about 150 members of the press also visited the venue. At the closing ceremony, the athletes' challenge transcending age and the hospitality of the citizens of Daegu emerged as key topics.
Margit Jungman, President of the World Masters Athletics Association (WMA), reflected on the significance of the event while expressing gratitude for the passion and friendship shown by the athletes in Daegu. President Jungman conveyed a message expressing his intention to long cherish the joy shared and the new friendships forged in Daegu.
In his closing remarks, Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho expressed his gratitude to the athletes, event officials, and citizens, stating, "Daegu has been filled with the passion, challenge, friendship, and harmony of the Masters Athletics family, who have heated up the city for the past 13 days."
He particularly emphasized that this event set a new milestone in the history of World Masters Athletics, making Daegu the first city to host both indoor and outdoor competitions. Mayor Chu stated, “Sawang Janpram, a 106-year-old Thai athlete and the oldest participant in the competition, set a new world record in the discus throw, and Kim Young-rak of Korea completed the 100m race at the age of ninety,” adding, “On the track and field of the Masters Games, there were no age limits or barriers.”
He further assessed, “The sight of athletes cheering for one another beyond competition records and medal colors, and becoming friends across borders and languages, demonstrated the great power inherent in sports.”
Although the competition has concluded, the event has left Daegu with challenges to address. Going forward, specific evaluations are needed regarding how much the 13-day stay of the athletes and their companions contributed to local tourism and consumption, and what impact the event had on the local economy relative to the costs invested in hosting the competition.
Taking this event as an opportunity, Daegu City plans to strengthen its brand as an international athletics city and continue follow-up projects that link sports with tourism. Mayor Chu said, “I hope that the sweat shed in Daegu, the friendships shared, and every moment spent with the citizens will become special memories that shine brightly in your lives for a long time,” adding, “Please visit Daegu again anytime.”
The Masters players, who heated up Daegu for 13 days, are now returning to their daily lives and home countries. The passion that began in Daegu will continue in Breda, Netherlands, in 2028.
