[Break News Daegu] Reporter Lee Seong-hyeon = Amid growing backlash that Daegu and Gyeongbuk (TK) have been repeatedly excluded from major national projects and key regional issues since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration, local political circles have come forward to strongly condemn the government's "TK bypassing" policy.
On the 5th, the People Power Party's Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongbuk Provincial Chapters (chaired by National Assembly member Kim Hyeong-dong) held a "Rally to Condemn Regional Discrimination by the Lee Jae-myung Administration," attended by National Assembly members and key party officials from the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions. During the rally, they raised their voices in unison to criticize the government's repeated policies of neglecting the region.
Attendees pointed out that while the Lee Jae-myung administration puts forward balanced national development as its justification, it is actually marginalizing Daegu and Gyeongbuk whenever major national decisions are made.
Lee In-seon, former chairperson of the Daegu City Party Committee, criticized the situation, stating, “Daegu and Gyeongbuk are being marginalized on every key pending issue on which the region’s future depends, such as the TK New Airport, the Special Act on Administrative Integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, and the three major mega-projects.” She added, “The final exclusion of Kyungpook National University, the region’s representative flagship national university, from the government’s recent ‘Creating 10 Seoul National Universities’ project is blatant regional discrimination.” She further emphasized, “The fact that the government designates the ‘Five Poles’ as the axis of balanced national development while repeatedly pushing aside and forcing Daegu and Gyeongbuk—one of the five poles—to wait is no longer a coincidence but a policy-driven marginalization.”
In particular, political circles in the Daegu region have made it clear that Daegu’s centrality and legitimacy must not be undermined in relation to major pending issues, such as the administrative integration of Daegu and Gyeongbuk to be pursued in the future. Voices are erupting fiercely in local political circles, demanding that "if the government truly intends to discuss integration and balanced development with sincerity, it must not stop at mere lip service; rather, upon administrative integration, it must clearly locate the headquarters and core institutions of the integrated local government—the actual 'body'—in the Daegu region." This is due to concerns that pursuing integration or national projects without solidifying Daegu's central industrial and administrative functions could ultimately lead to the weakening of the region's influence.
Kim Hyeong-dong, Chairman of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Party Committee, also criticized the government's unfair policy implementation, stating, "Balanced national development is not a matter of political distribution, but about ensuring that everyone can fairly enjoy opportunities for education, jobs, and industrial growth."
Through a resolution, all National Assembly members from Daegu and Gyeongbuk strongly demanded: ▲ a clear explanation from the government regarding the repeated marginalization of the TK region; ▲ the prompt presentation of substantive measures for the TK New Airport, the Special Act on Administrative Integration, and the three major mega-projects; and ▲ the guarantee of fair opportunities in major national projects and the transparent disclosure of the reasons for excluding Kyungpook National University. The People Power Party's TK political circles plan to launch an all-out effort to thoroughly scrutinize the government's regionally discriminatory budget and policies through the upcoming parliamentary audit and the review of next year's budget bill, and to protect the legitimate share and status of Daegu and Gyeongbuk.
