Young entrepreneurs and innovators from Daegu are demonstrating formidable momentum in a massive startup competition designed to allow anyone in South Korea to cross the threshold of entrepreneurship with just a single idea. In the first preliminary round of "Startup for All," a nationwide startup audition organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, 121 participants from the Daegu region proudly made it onto the list of successful candidates.

The competition was heated from the very start. Last May, a staggering 5,000 aspiring entrepreneurs and challengers from across the country flocked to the event. Following a rigorous three-month preliminary screening held from June to August, 1,100 finalists successfully passed the first round.

Among them, a total of 121 successful candidates were from Daegu (52 in the general and technology fields, and 69 in the local field), accounting for 11% of the total nationwide qualifiers. This is being evaluated as evidence that Daegu's entrepreneurial potential and the innovative ideas of local youth have truly resonated on the national stage, even amidst a startup ecosystem severely skewed toward the Seoul metropolitan area. In particular, participants from Daegu who entered the general and technology sectors captivated the judges by showcasing a large number of innovative items incorporating deep tech and cutting-edge new industry technologies. The local sector, based on alleyway commercial districts and regional resources, also produced a significant number of successful candidates—69 in total—through differentiated business models that captured Daegu's unique cultural and geographical charm.

For the 1,100 participants who passed the first preliminary round, a stage for full-scale competition awaits, accompanied by initial funding support for commercialization. A final 200 participants are scheduled to be selected following regional and district auditions and a more rigorous second round of screening.

Building on this success, Daegu Metropolitan City is launching a comprehensive, close-knit support initiative to ensure local participants can advance unhindered to the final round. The city is mobilizing its powerful mentoring infrastructure, led by the Daegu Center for Creative Economy Innovation, along with local universities and specialized accelerators (ACs). The city and mentor organizations plan to maximize the completeness of startup ideas by providing audition-tailored clinics to the 121 first-round qualifiers, focusing on refining business plans, verifying technology commercialization, and improving presentation (PT) skills.

Lee Eun-kyung, Head of the Startup & Venture Division at Daegu City, stated, "The results of this preliminary round served as an opportunity to demonstrate the boundless potential of Daegu entrepreneurs armed with novel ideas and excellent technological capabilities." She added, "We will not only spare no practical support to ensure that the region's creative talents achieve outstanding results, but we will also continue to foster a robust startup ecosystem based in Daegu that enables them to grow into world-class venture companies."
