포항시는 농림축산식품부가 주관한 2026년 ‘정부지정 농산물전문생산단지’ 공모에서 포항 수출딸기 단지가 최종 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

이번 지정은 2024년 경상북도 수출전문시범단지 선정에 이은 성과다. 포항시는 그동안 딸기를 전략적인 신선농산물 수출 품목으로 육성하면서 품질관리 체계와 생산·유통 기반을 꾸준히 보완해 왔다.

농산물전문생산단지는 농산물의 안정적인 수출 기반을 마련하고 해외시장 진출을 확대하기 위해 정부가 일정한 요건을 갖춘 생산단지를 대상으로 지정하는 제도다. 포항 수출딸기 단지는 이번 지정으로 해외 판로 개척과 시설 현대화, 생산 인프라 확충 등과 관련한 정부 지원을 우선적으로 받을 수 있게 됐다.

포항시는 특히 수출 과정에서 신선도와 상품성 유지가 중요한 딸기의 특성을 고려해 재배 품종을 수출 중심으로 전환해 왔다. 기존 내수시장 중심의 ‘설향’ 품종에서 벗어나 상대적으로 경도가 높아 수출에 적합한 ‘알타킹’과 ‘금실’ 등을 도입하며 수출 경쟁력 확보에 주력했다.

수확 이후 품질을 안정적으로 유지하기 위한 기반도 마련했다. 흥해농협과 포항시 딸기수출연합회를 중심으로 선별과 포장, 저온저장 등이 가능한 공동선과장을 구축했으며, 프리미엄 딸기 수출 전문조직인 ‘케이베리(K-Berry)’에도 참여해 유통 경쟁력 강화에 나섰다.

수출시장도 점차 넓어지고 있다. 포항산 딸기는 괌과 사이판을 비롯해 두바이, 홍콩, 싱가포르, 태국, 대만, 러시아 등 해외 여러 지역으로 공급되고 있다.

현재 포항에서는 55개 농가가 20.6ha 규모의 재배면적에서 연간 1천82t의 딸기를 생산하고 있으며, 이를 통해 약 100억원의 소득을 올리고 있다. 이 가운데 수출에는 15개 농가가 참여하고 있으며 재배면적은 7ha 규모다.

포항시는 이번 전문생산단지 지정이 수출용 딸기의 생산부터 유통, 해외 판로 확대까지 전반적인 경쟁력을 높이는 계기가 될 것으로 보고 있다. 기후변화에 대응할 수 있는 신품종 재배기술 교육과 안정적인 생산 기반 확충도 지속적으로 추진할 방침이다.

박용선 포항시장은 “이번 선정은 포항 딸기의 품질과 해외시장 경쟁력을 인정받은 결과”라며 “신품종 재배기술 보급과 안정적인 생산 기반 구축을 통해 수출 경쟁력을 더욱 높이고 2035년 농특산물 수출 500억원 목표를 달성할 수 있도록 지원을 강화하겠다”고 말했다.
