【브레이크뉴스 영천】이성현 기자=영천 출신 항일 독립운동가 손진구 선생이 경상북도가 선정하는 9월의 독립운동가로 이름을 올렸다. 산남의진에서 의병을 양성하고 일제에 맞선 데 이어 만주로 활동 무대를 옮기는 등 평생 독립운동에 헌신한 공적이 재조명됐다.

영천시는 손진구(孫晋球·1866~1928) 선생이 (재)경상북도호국보훈재단이 주관하는 ‘경북 9월의 독립운동가’로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

영천에서 태어난 손 선생은 1905년 을사늑약이 강제로 체결되자 을사오적의 처단과 조약 폐기를 요구하는 상소를 올리며 국권 회복을 위한 활동에 나섰다.

이듬해인 1906년 산남의진이 결성되면서 항일 의병활동에도 본격적으로 참여했다. 산남의진은 영천을 중심으로 경북 남동부 지역에서 활동한 대표적인 항일 의병부대다.

손 선생은 산남의진에서 훈련장과 총수를 맡아 의병을 훈련시키고 군자금을 확보하는 등 조직의 전력을 강화하는 역할을 했다. 이후 유격장으로 활동하며 100여 명의 의병을 이끌고 일본군과 전투를 벌였다.

항일 무장투쟁 과정에서 일본군에 체포된 손 선생은 징역 10년을 선고받았다. 그러나 1910년 출옥한 뒤에도 독립운동을 멈추지 않았다.

1913년 독립의군부에 참여한 데 이어 1919년에는 3·1만세운동에 참여했으며, 이후 만주로 망명해 독립을 위한 활동을 이어갔다. 정부는 이러한 공훈을 인정해 1991년 건국훈장 애국장을 추서했다.

이번 선정으로 산남의진에서 함께 활동했던 의병들의 공적도 함께 주목받고 있다. 국가보훈부가 이한구·손영각·최산두 선생을 ‘2026년 9월 이달의 독립운동가’로 선정하면서 영천을 중심으로 항일투쟁을 펼친 산남의진 의병들의 활동이 다시 조명되고 있다.

영천시는 이번 선정을 계기로 지역 독립운동가들의 활동과 공적을 알리는 선양사업을 이어갈 계획이다.

영천시 관계자는 “지역 출신 독립운동가인 손진구 선생의 삶과 희생정신이 널리 알려지는 계기가 마련됐다”며 “산남의진에서 활동한 독립운동가들이 함께 조명되는 만큼 영천의 항일 독립운동 역사를 알리고 지역 독립운동가를 발굴·기리는 사업에도 지속적으로 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.

Mr. Son Jin-gu, a Native of Yeongcheon, Selected as ‘Gyeongbuk Independence Activist of the Month for September’

Mr. Son Jin-gu, an anti-Japanese independence activist from Yeongcheon, has been named the Independence Activist of the Month for September by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. His lifelong dedication to the independence movement has been re-examined, including training righteous armies at the Sannam Uijin and fighting against Japanese imperialism, as well as expanding his activities to Manchuria.

Yeongcheon City announced that Mr. Son Jin-gu (1866–1928) was selected as the ‘Gyeongbuk Independence Activist of the Month for September’ by the Gyeongsangbuk-do Patriotic and Veterans Foundation.

Born in Yeongcheon, Mr. Son embarked on activities to restore national sovereignty after the forced signing of the Eulsa Treaty in 1905, submitting a petition demanding the execution of the five traitors of Eulsa and the abrogation of the treaty.

The following year, in 1906, with the formation of the Sannam Uijin, he also actively participated in anti-Japanese righteous army activities. Sannam Uijin was a representative anti-Japanese righteous army unit active in the southeastern Gyeongsangbuk-do region, centered around Yeongcheon.

Mr. Son served as the training commander and general in Sannam Uijin, playing a key role in strengthening the organization's combat power by training soldiers and securing military funds. Later, he served as a guerrilla commander, leading approximately 100 righteous army soldiers in battles against the Japanese army.

Arrested by the Japanese military during the armed anti-Japanese struggle, Mr. Son was sentenced to 10 years in prison. However, even after his release in 1910, he did not cease his independence movement.

He joined the Independent Righteous Army in 1913 and participated in the March 1st Independence Movement in 1919. Subsequently, he went into exile in Manchuria to continue his activities for independence. In recognition of these contributions, the government posthumously awarded him the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Chapter, in 1991.

With this selection, the achievements of the righteous army soldiers who were active alongside him in Sannam Uijin are also drawing attention. With the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs selecting Lee Han-gu, Son Yeong-gak, and Choi San-du as the "Independence Activists of the Month for September 2026," the activities of the Sannam Uijin militia, who waged an anti-Japanese struggle centered in Yeongcheon, are being shed new light.

Taking this selection as an opportunity, Yeongcheon City plans to continue projects to promote the activities and achievements of local independence activists.

An official from Yeongcheon City stated, "This provides an opportunity for the life and spirit of sacrifice of local independence activist Son Jin-gu to become widely known," adding, "As independence activists who were active in Sannam Uijin are also being highlighted, we will continue to strive to promote Yeongcheon's history of the anti-Japanese independence movement and to discover and honor local independence activists."
