Showcasing the Present and Future of Advanced Bio: ‘2026 Gyeongbuk Bio-Industry Expo’ Kicks Off
The ‘2026 Gyeongbuk Bio-Industry Expo,’ an event offering a comprehensive look at the technology and growth potential of Gyeongbuk’s bio-industry, has opened in Andong.
Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Andong City announced that they held the opening ceremony at the auxiliary stadium of the Andong Gymnasium on the 10th and would share the latest bio-industry technologies and research achievements over the course of the three-day event, which runs until the 12th.
Marking its fifth edition this year, the event is held under the theme "Gyeongbuk Opening the Future of Advanced Bio" across several venues, including the Andong Gymnasium, the Andong Culture & Arts Center, and the Andong City Youth Training Center. Approximately 100 people attended the opening ceremony, including Gyeongsangbuk-do Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang, provincial and city council members, bio-sector experts, and corporate representatives.
At the opening ceremony, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Andong City, and KAIST joined forces to foster the bio- and food-tech industries utilizing precision fermentation technology. The three institutions agreed to enhance industrial competitiveness in the fields of future foods and bio-materials by combining Andong’s existing bio-industry infrastructure and agri-food resources with KAIST’s research capabilities.
Under the agreement, the institutions plan to cooperate on fostering future food and bio-material industries using synthetic biology and precision fermentation; establishing public infrastructure for Living Modified Organisms (LMO); conducting advanced bio R&D, demonstration, and commercialization; adding high value to local agri-food resources; and training specialized personnel.
During the keynote speech, KAIST Distinguished Professor Lee Sang-yup presented the future development direction of the bio-industry under the theme, "Systems Metabolic Engineering Enabling Biomanufacturing." Professor Lee introduced technologies for designing microbial metabolic systems to produce pharmaceuticals, chemicals, fuels, and natural products, and explained the industrial potential of next-generation biomanufacturing driven by the convergence of AI and bioprocessing.
The exhibition features a wide range of technologies and products from companies and research institutions, alongside themed pavilions hosted by North Gyeongsang Province and Andong City. Highlights include SK Bioscience’s vaccines, T-Rivos’s cell culture technology, BioSolution’s advanced regenerative medicine, SilicoBio’s synthetic biology, and Neoken Bio’s hemp-related technologies; the Gyeongbuk IT Convergence Industry Technology Institute is also showcasing achievements in the beauty industry.
Seventy-seven companies and institutions are participating in this year’s event. At the Advanced Bio Conference, domestic and international experts are discussing technology trends and industrialization strategies across six key sectors: vaccines, cell culture, advanced regenerative medicine, beauty, hemp and natural products, and synthetic biology.
Programs designed to facilitate corporate investment and market expansion have also been organized. An investment consultation session is scheduled for the 11th, followed by a purchasing consultation session for domestic and overseas buyers on the 12th. Additionally, support programs for identifying overseas buyers via AI and facilitating exports are being implemented.
A job fair, introduced for the first time this year, is being held in collaboration with the Andong Office of the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Bio-pharmaceutical firms and local companies are meeting with job seekers for consultations, while support programs—such as personal color analysis and interview-ready hair and makeup styling—are available to help candidates prepare for employment.
Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang stated, "This expo and the associated business agreements mark the starting point for creating new industrial opportunities by combining Andong’s bio-industry infrastructure and local resources with cutting-edge research capabilities." He added, "We will expand the expertise accumulated in the vaccine industry into sectors such as biomaterials and future foods, transforming Andong into a bio-industry hub that attracts both companies and talent."
