[Break News Pohang] Reporter Park Young-jae — Bogyeongsa, a historic temple in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, has concluded this year’s "Traditional Mountain Temple National Heritage Utilization Project." However, concerns have arisen regarding a potential gap in these cultural heritage programs, as the temple was excluded from the 2027 project list due to budget cuts resulting from national fiscal tightening.
Bogyeongsa houses eight nationally designated cultural heritage items, as well as tangible cultural heritage designated by the province and city, a natural monument (trifoliate orange tree), and the scenic area of Mt. Naeyeon. The area surrounding the twelve waterfalls of Mt. Naeyeon is also recognized as a key geological site within the East Coast Geopark.
The painting *Samyongchudo*—a "true-view landscape" (jingyeong sansuhwa) depicting the waterfalls of Mt. Naeyeon by the late Joseon Dynasty artist Gyeomjae Jeong Seon—serves as a representative asset showcasing the historical and cultural value of Bogyeongsa and the Mt. Naeyeon area.
As a branch temple of Bulguksa (the headquarters of the 11th Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism), Bogyeongsa has carried out the Traditional Mountain Temple National Heritage Utilization Project from 2023 through this year with support from the Korea Heritage Service.
This year’s project comprised five distinct programs. The "Meeting Gyeomjae Jeong Seon" program involved exploring the artist's footsteps and the waterfall areas of Mt. Naeyeon that inspired *Samyongchudo*, while incorporating history and humanities lectures alongside nature experiences. Participants also engaged in "plogging" (picking up litter while hiking) during their descent.
"Ah! Bogyeongsa: A Thousand Years Past, A Thousand Years Future" is a program designed to explore the national and local cultural heritage sites scattered throughout the temple grounds. Notably, this year featured a special traveling exhibition showcasing the *Yeongsanhoesangdo* (Painting of the Vulture Peak Assembly) and *Jijangbosaldo* (Painting of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva)—works that were recovered after being stolen—thereby highlighting the significance of cultural heritage repatriation. The "A Precious Connection Between You and Me" program invited socially vulnerable members of the local community to participate in activities such as traditional tea ceremonies, Zen meditation, and tea-time conversations.
"Mind and Body at Ease: Balu Gongyang" (Traditional Monastic Meal) adapted the traditional monastic dining ritual to modern dietary habits, offering participants an experience that combined mindful eating with practices like reducing food waste, adopting plant-based diets, and protecting the environment.
The "Jingyeong Sansu (True-View Landscape) Cultural Arts Festival" invited drawing and urban sketching artists from across the country to interpret the cultural and natural landscapes of the traditional mountain temple and Naeyeonsan Mountain through a modern artistic lens. The event also featured small-scale concerts and cultural experience activities.
Bogyeongsa Temple noted that public interest and participation had steadily grown over the years. Consequently, they had planned to reorganize the programs into four distinct categories by 2027—based on the results of the past four years—and expand operations to hold approximately 50 events annually.
However, due to national fiscal tightening that significantly reduced the budget for the Korea Heritage Service compared to the previous year, Bogyeongsa’s proposal for the 2027 "Traditional Mountain Temple Heritage Utilization Project" was not selected.
A temple official expressed disappointment, stating, "We had planned to expand the project based on the programs we developed and the positive response from participants, so it is regrettable that we were not selected for next year." They added, "There are concerns that it may become difficult to sustain local cultural tourism programs that utilize traditional mountain temples and national heritage sites."
With the conclusion of this year's project, Bogyeongsa plans to review the achievements of its existing programs and prepare for the possibility of resuming heritage utilization projects in the future.
