Gyeongju City Council Inspects Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant and Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility… “Safety Management and Communication Must Be Strengthened”

The Gyeongju City Council visited key local nuclear facilities to personally inspect their operational status and safety management practices.

The Gyeongju City Council (Chairman Im Hwal) announced on the 11th that all its members visited the Wolseong Nuclear Power Headquarters and the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) in succession to review facility operations and exchange views with officials.

This site visit was organized to directly verify the safety management status of the nuclear power plant and the radioactive waste disposal facility—both located in the region—and to examine issues concerning citizen safety.

In the morning, the council members visited the Wolseong Nuclear Power Headquarters and received a briefing on overall plant operations. They then proceeded to "MACSTOR," a dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, to check its operational and management status.

Subsequently, at the Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3, they toured the plant's operations and the wet storage facility for spent nuclear fuel to inspect safety management measures.

In the afternoon, the members visited the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) to hear a report on the management of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. Following the briefing, they engaged in a Q&A session regarding relevant matters and visited the observation deck for the Phase 2 surface disposal facility to examine the site's status.

During the visit, the council members emphasized to facility officials that safety must be the top priority and that thorough management is essential for both the nuclear power plant and the radioactive waste facilities. They also urged the officials to strive for continuous communication and transparent information disclosure so that local residents can be accurately informed.

Chairman Im Hwal stated, “Given that Gyeongju is home to nuclear power plants and a radioactive waste disposal facility, it is crucial for the council to accurately understand the operational status and safety management of these facilities.” He added, “We will continue to visit the sites in person to listen to the voices of citizens and ensure that safety management is properly maintained.”
