Turning Gyeongbuk’s Stories into Content: ‘K-Story Festival’ to be Held in Andong
A festival aimed at expanding the stories found within Gyeongbuk’s history and culture into diverse forms of content—such as webtoons, dramas, and films—will take place in Andong.
The ‘2026 Gyeongbuk K-Story Festival,’ hosted by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Andong City and organized by the Gyeongbuk Culture Foundation’s Content Agency, will be held on the 17th and 18th at the Andong Culture & Arts Center.
Now in its fifth year, the event was designed to transform local historical and cultural assets into content and to foster networking between creators and industry professionals. Since launching as a pre-festival in 2022, it has established itself as a premier content event that supports the discovery and industrialization of local stories.
This year’s theme is ‘K-Story: The Beginning of Content.’ The event highlights the importance of storytelling—the foundation of the globally expanding K-content phenomenon—and focuses on developing the stories embedded throughout Gyeongbuk into new content intellectual properties (IP).
The most eye-catching program is the ‘Special Exhibition of Representative Gyeongbuk Manhwa Artists,’ held at Gallery 34 of the Andong Culture & Arts Center. The exhibition spotlights artists Lee Doo-ho, Lee Sang-moo, and Lee Hyun-se—all hailing from Gyeongbuk—and traces the evolution of Korean comics and their connection to the modern webtoon industry through their signature works and artistic worlds.
Artist Lee Doo-ho adapted Korean themes and narratives into comics through works like *Meoteol Dosa* and *Gaekju*, while Lee Sang-moo garnered widespread popularity with the *Dokgo Tak* series. Lee Hyun-se is recognized as a leading figure who ushered in a new golden age for Korean comics with works such as *Fearless Outsider Baseball Team* (*Gongpo-ui Oein-gudan*).
Programs allowing creators and the public to meet in person are also included in the lineup. Writers spanning the fields of science fiction and science—such as Kwak Jae-sik, Joo Dong-geun (creator of the webtoon *All of Us Are Dead*), and Kim Jae-hwan (writer of dramas like *Your Honor* and *Boyhood*)—will participate in lectures and talk sessions to share their creative processes and experiences related to their works.
Sessions exploring the industrial potential of regional content will also be held. During the event, a "Story IP Pitching & Business Matching" program will take place, allowing creators based in Gyeongbuk to present their works to industry professionals from production companies, broadcasters, and OTT platforms.
One-on-one business meetings will be arranged on-site to discuss the discovery of high-quality story IPs and their commercialization potential in detail. The goal is to establish a bridge that connects stories created in the region to actual content production and investment.
A wide range of content-related experiential programs awaits the general public. These include the "Gyeongbuk K-Story Festival Themed Exhibition," a story creation experience zone, screenings of the agency’s signature animation *Gangchi Island*, the Gyeongbuk K-Story Picture Book Creation Contest, and an exhibition of brand webtoons from the Yeongnam and Honam regions.
Lee Jong-su, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture Foundation Content Agency, stated, "Stories are the starting point that drives various content industries, including dramas, movies, games, and comics." He added, "Through this festival, we aim to highlight the value of Gyeongbuk's rich storytelling resources and expand the foundation for a content business ecosystem where creators and companies can grow together."
Details regarding the event schedule, specific programs, and participation registration can be found on the official "Gyeongbuk K-Story Festival" website. <
