Three graduate students from the School of Computer Software at Catholic University of Daegu have simultaneously been selected for a government-funded academic research support program in science and engineering, securing a total of 74 million won in research funding.
Each of the three students will independently lead research projects on cutting-edge software technologies, including cloud computing, autonomous driving, and Kubernetes.
Moon Ji-won (doctoral program), Bae Gyeong-min (master's program), and Im Chan-a (master's program)—all members of the Software Systems Laboratory within the School of Computer Software—were selected for the "2026 Academic Research Support Program in Science and Engineering" (Research Grant category) organized by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea; they began their research on the 1st of this month.
Moon Ji-won is undertaking a two-year project titled "Research on a Preemption-Aware Scheduling Framework in Environments with Probabilistic Resource Availability." The core of this research involves predicting resource states in environments where idle and available resources constantly fluctuate and efficiently allocating resources while accounting for the possibility of preemption. The study focuses on maximizing resource utilization efficiency in cloud and edge computing environments.
Bae Gyeong-min is focusing on "Research on Adaptive MPPI Control Methods Based on Situation Awareness, Robust to Complex AMR Autonomous Driving Environments." The goal is to develop technology that enables Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) to autonomously perceive their surroundings and adjust control based on driving conditions, even in complex and rapidly changing environments.
Im Chan-a is conducting research on "Execution Environment Isolation and Workload-Aware Resource Scheduling in On-Premise Kubernetes Environments." She will analyze the characteristics of Kubernetes workloads on self-built servers and develop technologies to efficiently isolate and allocate resources based on those characteristics. While the three studies address different topics, they share a common approach: using software technology to solve problems encountered in real-world operational environments. They also enhanced the feasibility of practical validation by actively utilizing infrastructure built and managed directly within the laboratory.
The Software Systems Laboratory has independently constructed a 20-node Kubernetes cluster to run 61 services and possesses a range of research equipment, including high-performance GPU servers, five outdoor autonomous mobile robots, and 32-channel LiDAR systems.
Currently, the laboratory conducts research across diverse fields—such as autonomous driving, intelligent mobility, and cloud-native infrastructure—under the leadership of Professors Jeon Su-bin, Seo Dong-man, and Lee Doo-hee.
"I believe the positive reception stems from our ability to identify problems directly within operational systems and develop them into academic inquiries," said Professor Jeon Su-bin. "We will continue to support our students so they can fully focus on their research and achieve meaningful results."
