Gyeongju Expo Park Sees Rise in Visitors and Admission Revenue; Plans to Enhance Content for Second Half of Year

Gyeongju Expo Park is experiencing an upward trend in visitor numbers, with notable increases in both foreign visitors and admission revenue.

The Gyeongsangbuk-do Culture & Tourism Organization reported that the park attracted approximately 214,000 visitors between January and July of this year, a 13% increase from the 188,000 recorded during the same period last year. Admission revenue for the same period totaled 1.437 billion won, up 34% from 1.071 billion won the previous year.

The growth in foreign tourism was particularly striking. The number of foreign visitors reached 4,096 during the January–July period, marking a roughly 55% increase year-on-year. The organization attributed this growth to sustained international awareness and tourism demand following last year's APEC summit, as well as the appeal of family-oriented, experiential content.

New programs introduced at the park also contributed to the rise in visitor numbers. The "EXPO-REST Children’s Book-nic," held in May to mark "Family Month," combined reading, performances, and hands-on activities, attracting around 10,000 visitors over three days.

In August, the park launched "EX-HORROR," a summer-themed horror experience, drawing 24,857 visitors. These distinct programs, tailored to the season and visitor interests, are establishing themselves as key attractions for the park.

Gyeongju Expo Park plans to further boost visitor numbers in the second half of the year by rolling out a series of nighttime attractions and cultural events. From the 24th of this month through October 24, the "EX-Pumpkin Night" event—featuring autumn-themed nighttime attractions—will be held. October will also see the "Gyeongbuk Arirang Festival" and performances of the National Jeongdong Theater’s production, *Gwangdae* (The Clown). In November, the "Silk Road Noodle Festival" is scheduled to take place, offering a variety of cultural and tourism programs.

Additionally, street performances—including mime acts and busking—will be held every weekend from September through November. The strategy is to expand not only large-scale events but also smaller, casual performances, thereby transforming the venue into a destination rich in attractions and entertainment regardless of when visitors arrive.

Based on these offerings, the Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Organization plans to boost visitor numbers during the peak autumn tourism season and sustain tourism demand through the end of the year.

Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Organization, stated, "It is significant that Gyeongju’s heightened profile as a tourist destination is translating into actual visits and spending." He added, "We will continue to curate a diverse range of nighttime attractions, performances, and festivals throughout the second half of the year, striving to make Gyeongju Expo Park a tourist hotspot that offers fresh enjoyment in every season."
