Daegu City Selects 6 Recipients for the 46th Cultural Award; Honoring Contributions to Regional Cultural Development

Six individuals who have contributed to the development of the local community through their work in Daegu’s culture and arts, academia, media, and sports sectors have been selected as recipients of the 46th Daegu Metropolitan City Cultural Award.

Daegu City announced that it held a selection committee meeting on the 3rd and finalized the winners across six categories. The recipients are Hong Won-hwa (Natural Sciences), Choi Sang-dae (Spatial Arts), Choi Hyun-mook (Stage Arts), Eom Chang-seok (Literature), Hwang Sang-hyun (Media), and Ju Nam-jun (Sports).

Established in 1981, the Daegu Metropolitan City Cultural Award is a prestigious regional honor that recognizes individuals who have contributed to the promotion of culture and the arts, as well as the development of traditional culture. With this year's recipients, the total number of award winners since its inception reaches 296.

Hong Won-hwa, the President of the National Research Foundation of Korea and the winner in the Natural Sciences category, was recognized for his contributions to advancing disaster-safety design technology within the field of architectural environments. He was particularly commended for his research into design technologies that incorporate factors such as building flood risks and pedestrian behavioral characteristics, thereby driving both academic and technical progress in disaster response.

Choi Sang-dae, former president of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Institute of Architects, was selected in the Spatial Arts category. He has contributed to the development of local architectural culture and the expansion of the cultural and artistic landscape through continuous creative architectural design work, as well as through writing and lectures on architectural humanities.

The Stage Arts award went to playwright Choi Hyun-mook. He was recognized for expanding the creative horizons of local theater by producing works based on regional history and themes—most notably the play *First Love, 1919*, which tells the stories of local artists against the backdrop of the 1919 independence movement in Daegu. Novelist Eom Chang-seok, the recipient in the literature category, is a prominent writer representing Daegu who has published numerous works within the Korean literary scene. He was selected for the award in recognition of his contributions to fostering junior writers—having mentored around 20 authors who debuted through contests such as the New Spring Literary Awards—and for his efforts to advance local literature.

Hwang Sang-hyun, News Director at TBC, was named the recipient in the media category. Throughout his career as a local broadcast journalist, Hwang has covered major institutions such as the National Assembly and the Blue House, reported extensively on local issues, and dedicated himself to keeping residents informed about key developments.

The recipient in the sports category is Ju Nam-jun, President of the Daegu Nam-gu Soft Tennis Association. He was recognized for his contributions to revitalizing local recreational sports by sponsoring tournaments, promoting sports programs for the general public, and consistently supporting the development of athletic talent.

Daegu City will hold the 46th Daegu Metropolitan City Culture Awards ceremony on October 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Biseul Hall in the Daegu Culture & Arts Center, with the award recipients, their families, and citizens in attendance.

Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, "Culture and the arts are vital assets that enrich the lives of citizens and elevate the city's stature." He added, "I extend my gratitude to the recipients for their long-standing dedication to local cultural development and hope for their continued interest and support in the future growth of Daegu's culture."
