Daegu Airport-Centered Tourism Zone Selected; Mega-Regional Tourism Belt Linking Gyeongju and Andong to be Established
Daegu and Gyeongbuk are launching an initiative to create a mega-regional tourism zone centered on Daegu Airport, linking the cities of Gyeongju and Andong.
Daegu City announced that the Daegu Airport tourism zone has been selected for the "Project to Foster Five Major Tourism Zones Centered on Regional Airports," an initiative led by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. This tourism zone encompasses Daegu—serving as the gateway city—along with Gyeongju and Andong as connected destinations.
The project aims to prepare for an era of 30 million inbound tourists by dispersing foreign tourism demand—currently concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area—to regional areas and developing regional airports into new tourism hubs.
The government plans to establish tourism zones centered on five regional airports—Daegu, Gimhae, Cheongju, Muan, and Yangyang—and implement related projects from 2027 to 2030. Based on the 2027 government proposal, the total project budget is 93.5 billion won, comprising 65.9 billion won in state funding and 27.6 billion won in local funding.
The project includes developing a joint brand for the tourism zone, conducting overseas promotion and marketing, attracting foreign tourists through regional airports, improving tourism transportation and user convenience, and creating tourism products based on K-content. Daegu City plans to carry out the project in cooperation with relevant agencies, such as the Korea Tourism Organization and the Korea Airports Corporation.
Tourism content jointly proposed by Daegu City and Gyeongbuk Province also played a key role in the selection. The two sides presented a "K-Heritage" tourism theme that combines Daegu’s urban center, modern history, and medical tourism resources with Gyeongju’s Silla culture and Andong’s Confucian culture.
The initiative envisions a tourism model that links the representative tourism resources of each region into a single travel itinerary, thereby encouraging foreign tourists to stay longer and increase their spending. Based on this, Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province plan to develop the area into a destination for extended stays by improving tourist mobility and bolstering tourism infrastructure, such as shopping and accommodation facilities.
Inter-regional cooperation to establish this tourism zone began early on. From March to August, Daegu City and North Gyeongsang Province held five rounds of working-level consultations—including strategic meetings between the heads of their respective tourism bureaus—to align the project's direction. Throughout this process, they incorporated tourism demand and feedback from linked cities such as Gyeongju and Andong.
In September, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism convened a selection committee and finalized the "Daegu Airport Tourism Zone" as the designated project site. Daegu City plans to finalize specific project details in collaboration with the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute by this December and launch full-scale implementation starting next year.
Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, "We have laid the groundwork to establish a wide-area tourism zone that connects Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, centered around Daegu Airport." He added, "We will strengthen tourism content and our capacity to host visitors—enabling foreign tourists to stay longer and engage in both sightseeing and spending—to transform this area into a competitive tourism destination."
