Daegu City Steps Up Price Management for Chuseok Holiday Goods; Organizes Direct Markets and Discount Events

Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, Daegu City has begun monitoring the supply and demand of agricultural, livestock, and marine products and implementing measures to stabilize the prices of key holiday goods.

On the 11th, the city held a meeting at its Sangyeok Complex regarding "Supply Management and Price Stabilization Measures for Chuseok Holiday Goods" to review price trends and the supply status of major items.

Representatives from 24 organizations attended the meeting, including Daegu City officials, representatives from the city's nine districts and counties, the Daegu Agricultural & Marine Products Distribution Management Corporation, agencies overseeing distribution, quality control, and fair trade, as well as wholesale corporations, department stores, and large supermarkets. Participants shared information on supply conditions and price trends for items with rising demand ahead of Chuseok and discussed response strategies for each organization.

Daegu City plans to adjust the supply volume of holiday goods based on market conditions. The Daegu Agricultural & Marine Products Distribution Management Corporation, NongHyup (National Agricultural Cooperative Federation), and wholesale corporations will continuously monitor wholesale market trends and supply-demand dynamics, flexibly managing supply volumes—particularly for items experiencing concentrated consumer demand.

A series of discount events will also be held to alleviate the financial burden of holiday shopping for citizens.

A direct market for agricultural, livestock, and marine products will operate in the parking lot of the Daegu Local Food Direct Sales Store from the 15th to the 19th. Key Chuseok goods will be sold there at prices 30–50% lower than market rates. NongHyup’s regional headquarters will offer discounts of 10–30% on major items, while the Daegu Livestock Cooperative will hold a discount sale for Hanwoo (Korean beef) on the 12th and 13th.

Local department stores and large supermarkets have also prepared discount events tailored to the holiday season. Daegu Department Store is offering gift vouchers worth 5% of the purchase amount and discounts of 10–30% on select carry-home items. Dong-A Department Store is holding a sale offering 20–30% off agricultural, livestock, and marine products.

Lotte Department Store and Hyundai Department Store are selling ceremonial goods at 20–30% discounts and introducing value-oriented gift sets. Shinsegae Department Store and E-Mart plan to offer discounts of up to 50% on select items for customers who pre-order holiday gifts.

Support measures to boost the use of traditional markets are also being implemented. From the 11th to the 27th, Daegu City will designate parking zones on roads near traditional markets to improve convenience for holiday shoppers.

Additionally, from the 16th to the 20th, a promotion will be held to provide refunds of up to 30% of purchase amounts for agricultural, marine, and livestock products in the form of "Onnuri" gift vouchers.

On-site inspections to monitor prices and protect consumers will also be intensified. Ahead of Chuseok, the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service and fair trade agencies plan to focus on checking for violations regarding country-of-origin labeling, unfair pricing, and unfair practices during transactions.

Daegu City and its nine districts and counties will operate a comprehensive price monitoring center to continuously track the prices of high-demand holiday goods and local price trends throughout the holiday period. Price trends at major retail outlets, including traditional markets and large retailers, will also be monitored.

If the prices of specific items surge or supply disruptions occur, the plan is to immediately share information among relevant agencies and devise appropriate countermeasures.

Daegu City plans to continue implementing the measures discussed at the meeting through the Chuseok holiday and will work with relevant agencies to stabilize prices should any signs of instability—such as supply issues or price spikes—emerge.

Park Ki-hwan, Director of the Daegu City Economic Bureau, stated, "Ahead of Chuseok, we will closely monitor the supply and price trends of key holiday goods and strive to alleviate the burden of grocery shopping for citizens." He added, "We will respond proactively to any factors causing price hikes or supply instability, while urging the retail sector to actively offer discounts and calling on relevant agencies to conduct thorough supervision and enforcement."
