Daegu City Launches AI-Integrated Energy Talent Development; 11 Billion Won in State Funding Over Six Years

Daegu City is embarking on a project to train master’s and doctoral-level specialists to support the transformation of the energy industry through the use of artificial intelligence (AI).

The city announced that its "AI-Driven Energy Technology Sharing University" project was selected in the open call for new initiatives under the "2026 Energy Workforce Development Project (Energy Technology Sharing University)," organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

Accordingly, Daegu City will invest a total of 14 billion won over six years—from September 2026 to December 2031—to carry out the project. The funding comprises 11 billion won in state funds and 3 billion won in municipal funds.

The Energy Technology Sharing University is a national initiative in which universities, companies, and innovation agencies collaborate to train high-level specialists capable of responding to carbon neutrality goals and shifts in the energy industry. The project aims to secure talent needed in local industrial sectors by having participating universities share educational and research infrastructure and by conducting industry-linked training programs.

Kyungpook National University will lead the project, with participation from Keimyung University, Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), and Daegu Technopark. Sixteen local companies specializing in energy and materials/components—including L&F, AVACO, and CAPEC Valeo—will also participate as partner companies.

Daegu City plans to expand the scope of cooperation to include public institutions such as the Korea Gas Corporation, thereby establishing a regional talent development system that links universities, companies, and public institutions.

The curriculum will focus on key areas of the local energy industry: efficiency improvement, demand management, and energy storage. By integrating AI technology, the program aims to move beyond traditional equipment-centered efficiency measures and cultivate talent equipped with intelligent energy management capabilities—utilizing data analysis, forecasting, and automated control systems. Specific initiatives include establishing and operating an energy technology-sharing platform, developing curricula—such as inter-university credit exchanges and joint online courses—and conducting industry-academia collaboration projects linked with companies.

Industry-academia collaboration that directly connects real-world industrial challenges with education will also be strengthened. Under this model, teams comprising students and faculty advisors will inspect partner companies' processes and facilities, analyze energy usage, and propose cost-saving measures. Up to 15 million won in funding will be provided for each company-specific project.

Through these efforts, students will gain hands-on experience in solving real-world industrial problems, while companies can expect to improve energy efficiency and resolve technical challenges encountered on-site.

Daegu City has set a goal to support 305 master’s and doctoral students, produce 125 degree recipients, and cultivate 130 certified specialists through this project. Of these, 52 are expected to secure employment with local partner companies.

Support measures to encourage local talent to settle in the region will also be implemented. The city plans to establish a four-stage talent development system—spanning needs assessment, practical training, projects and certification, and finally employment and local settlement—while operating recruitment consulting services and job fairs to curb the outflow of young local talent.

Daegu Mayor Choo Kyung-ho stated, "Selection for this project will serve as a catalyst for transforming Daegu’s energy-intensive industrial structure into an AI-based, intelligent energy industry." He added, "By fostering collaboration among universities, companies, and support agencies, we will cultivate the talent needed by local industries and create a virtuous cycle where these individuals find employment and settle down within local companies."
