동국대 경주캠퍼스는 지난 1일 암으로 투병 중인 조말순 여사(73세)가 전 재산을 장학금으로 기부했다고 2일 밝혔다.

학교측에 따르면 이날 병원에 입원 중인 조말순 여사를 대신하여 딸 김유운 씨가 지난 1일 이영경 동국대 경주캠퍼스총장을 찾아와 모친의 뜻과 함께 1억 원을 전달했다.

이날 기금 전달식에는 부산 천불정사 주지 고담스님과 천불정사 공양주로 봉사하고 있는 기부자의 언니 조정자 씨가 함께 했다.

조말순 여사는 젊은 시절 사별 이후 양산 애육원에서 30년 동안 보호자가 없는 아이들을 돌보며, 외동딸을 간호사로 키워냈다. 외동딸은 호주에서 남편과 세 자녀와 함께 거주하며 홈스글렌대학 간호학 강사로 재직 중이다.

조말순 여사는 “기부에 아무런 조건이 없습니다. 단지 저와 같은 아픈 사람을 고쳐주는 의사선생님 그리고 이 나라에 꼭 필요한 훌륭한 학생들을 잘 키워 주세요”라는 뜻을 전했다.

김유운 씨는 “어머니께서 평생 남들을 위해서 사셨는데 이제 마지막 회향을 앞두고도 남을 위해 뜻을 내셔서 너무 자랑스럽습니다.”고 말하며 직접 품에 가져 온 현금 1억 원을 직접 전달했다.

기부자의 언니 조정자 씨는 “천불정사 주지이신 고담스님께서 딸에게 돈을 물려주는 것보다, 불자로서 어떻게 살아야 하는지 어머니가 보여주신 그 정신을 물려주는 것이 중요다고 하시며 동국대 경주캠퍼스에 기부를 권하셨다”라며 “더 많이 기부하진 못했지만, 기부의 마음은 천억보다 더 소중하다는 것을 알아 달라”고 말했다.

이영경 동국대 경주캠퍼스총장은 “오늘 이렇게 소중한 인연으로 우리 동국대 경주캠퍼스에 오신 것에 대해 감사드리고, 보살님의 뜻을 저희가 무겁게 받아들이고 정말 뜻에 맞게 잘 하겠다”라며 “보살님과 따님 두 분 뜻을 받들어 정말 학교가 잘 하고, 좋은 인재를 키우는 데에 소중히 사용하겠다”고 감사를 전했다.
