안동면의 독립만세운동은 1919년 3월 13일 만진 이상동(석주 이상룡의동생)이 안동장터에서 펼친 단독시위를 시작으로 점차 확대되었고, 2천5백여 명으로 늘어난 사람들은 군청, 경찰청, 법원으로 몰려가 애국지사의석방을 요구하는 등 투석전을 펼쳤다.

만진 이상동은 1990년 건국훈장 애족장을 추서 받았으며, 안동장터 3·1만세 운동지는 현재 각종 행사 및 다양한 체험을 할 수 있는 문화행사의 공간으로써 활용되고 있다.

국가보훈부는 2018년 12월 안동장터 3·1만세 운동지를 독립운동 현충시설로 지정했다.

Gyeongbuk Northern Veterans Affairs Office (Director Lee Hong-gyun) selected Andong Market March 1st Independence Movement Site (Culture Street, Culture Square Road, Andong-si, Gyeongbuk) as the Regional Memorial Facility of the Month as the March 1st Independence Movement was selected as the Independence Movement of the Month in March 2025, marking the 80th anniversary of liberation.

The Independence Movement in Andong-myeon began with a solo demonstration by Manjin Lee Sang-dong (younger brother of Seokju Lee Sang-ryong) at Andong Market on March 13, 1919, and gradually expanded. The number of people who gathered increased to 2,500, and they threw stones at the county office, police station, and court to demand the release of the patriotic leader.

Manjin Lee Sang-dong was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990, and the Andong Market March 1st Independence Movement Site is currently used as a space for various events and cultural activities. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs designated the Andong Market March 1st Independence Movement Site as an independence movement memorial facility in December 2018.
