【브레이크뉴스 영천】박영재 기자=지난 2022년 서해상에서 발생한 공군 전투기 추락 사고 당시 조종사 2명의 생명을 구한 스리랑카 국적 근로자가 체류 기간 만료와 건강 악화로 어려움을 겪고 있는 사실이 뒤늦게 알려졌다.
사고 당시 경기 화성시 전곡항 인근에서 작업 중이던 스리랑카 국적 루완(35) 씨는 전투기 추락 소식을 듣자 동료들과 함께 즉시 배를 몰아 사고 현장으로 향했다. 루완 씨 일행은 낙하산 줄과 김 양식장 밧줄에 엉켜 움직이지 못하던 조종사 2명을 발견하고, 양식 도구를 이용해 밧줄을 끊어내 구조에 성공했다. 이후 구조 헬기가 정확한 위치를 파악할 수 있도록 연막탄을 전달하는 등 침착하고 신속한 대응으로 두 조종사의 생명을 구했다.
이들의 구조 활동은 사고 발생 약 보름 뒤 외국인주민 상담지원센터를 통해 알려졌으며, 루완 씨 일행은 과거에도 침몰 위기에 처한 낚싯배 승객을 구조한 경험이 있는 것으로 전해졌다. 루완 씨는 이러한 공로를 인정받아 외국인 상담지원센터로부터 표창을 받기도 했다.
하지만 현재 루완 씨의 상황은 녹록지 않다. 그는 지난해 10월 체류 기간이 만료되면서 미등록 체류자 신분이 됐고, 최근에는 건강 악화로 병원 치료를 받는 과정에서 근무지로부터 퇴사 조치까지 당한 것으로 알려졌다. 현재는 경북 영천에 위치한 한국스리랑카불교사원에 머물며 도움을 기다리고 있다.

한국스리랑카불교사원 주지 완사 스님은 “위험을 무릅쓰고 한국 사회에서 두 명의 소중한 생명을 구한 루완 씨가 지금은 체류 자격 문제로 기본적인 보호조차 받지 못하는 현실에 놓여 있다”며 “그의 공적을 고려해 체류 기간 연장 등 실질적인 제도적 보호가 이뤄지길 바란다”고 말했다.
당시 구조로 조종사 2명의 생명을 살린 명백한 공로가 있는 만큼, 인도적 차원에서 체류 자격을 연장하고 치료와 생계가 가능하도록 정부와 관계 기관의 적극적인 검토가 필요하다는 목소리가 커지고 있다.

Venerable Wansa, the head monk of the Korea Sri Lankan Buddhist Temple, stated, "Mr. Ruwan, who risked his life to save two precious lives in Korea, is now unable to receive even basic protections due to residency issues. We hope that his achievements will be recognized and that substantial institutional protections, such as an extension of his stay, will be provided."
Given his clear contribution in saving the lives of the two pilots, there are growing calls for the government and relevant agencies to actively review the matter to extend his residency status on humanitarian grounds and ensure his medical treatment and livelihood.
