경주병원에 따르면 마하회는 승가재교육을 통한 비구니승가의 위상 정립을 목표로 창립되었으며, 매년 수련회를 열고 자체적으로 교육을 진행하던 비구니스님들의 모임이다.

마하회 회장인 현정스님은 “마하회는 그동안 출가수행자로서 어떻게 살아야하며 무엇에 매진해야하는지 고민하면서 승가의 위상을 정립하고 승가에 표상을 마련하고자 하였다. 그동안 회비로 모은 돈은 포교와 교육불사 등 나눔 활동을 위해 사용하며 창립 초기부터 정한 원칙대로 사용하였다.”고 설명했다.

또한 “초기 뜻을 모아 함께한 스님들이 이제는 원로가 되어 올해 창립 25주년을 맞이하는 마하회의 회향을 결정하게 되었다. 이에 남은 회비 2천만원에 십시일반으로 모은 1천만원을 더 보태어 불교종립병원인 동국대학교경주병원 발전을 위해 기부하면서 마무리하려고 한다”고 기부의사를 밝혔다.

정호근 병원장은 “스님들의 원력으로 지켜온 마하회의 소중한 정재에 깊은 감사의 뜻을 전하며, 더 자비로운 의술로 불교종립병원으로서 역할과 지역민이 믿고 찾을 수 있는 병원이 되도록 더욱 정진하겠다”고 약속했다.
