【브레이크뉴스 포항】박영재 기자=아시아태평양이론물리센터(소장 사사키 미사오, 이하APCTP)는 센터의 초대 소장이자 세계적인 이론물리학자 양 전닝(Chen Ning Yang) 교수가 이달 18일 중국 베이징에서 향년 103세로 별세했다고 20일 밝혔다.
양 전닝 교수는 1957년 리정다오(Lee Tsung-Dao) 박사와 함께 ‘패리티 비보존 법칙’을 입증해 노벨물리학상을 공동 수상했으며, ‘양-밀스 이론(Yang–Mills theory)’을 제창해 현대 입자물리학의 표준모형(Standard Model) 정립에 큰 기여를 했다.
양 교수는 학문적 업적뿐 아니라 국경을 초월한 과학 협력과 자유로운 지식 교류의 중요성을 강조해 왔으며, 이러한 철학은 APCTP의 설립 취지와도 맞닿아 있다. APCTP는 그의 학문적 명성과 리더십을 바탕으로 1997년 3월 양 교수를 초대 소장 겸 이사장으로 선임했다.

양 교수는 이후에도 아태 지역 젊은 물리학자 양성과 국제 학술교류 활성화를 위해 꾸준히 헌신했다. 사사키 미사오 소장은 “양 전닝 교수께서는 이론물리학의 위대한 개척자이자 아시아태평양 이론물리 공동체의 상징이었다”며 “그의 비전과 유산을 계승해 APCTP가 세계 기초과학 협력의 허브로 더욱 발전해 나가겠다”고 추모의 뜻을 전했다.
한편, APCTP는 1996년 APEC 회의를 계기로 설립된 국내 유일의 국제이론물리센터로, 현재 아시아태평양 지역 19개 회원국 및 36개 협정기관과 협력하고 있다. 지금까지 300여 명의 국내외 과학 인재를 유치·양성했으며, 정부의 과학기술진흥기금 및 복권기금 지원을 바탕으로 공동연구와 학술교류를 활발히 이어가고 있다. 또 대중강연, 과학축제, 청소년 프로그램 등 다양한 시민 대상 활동을 통해 기초과학의 공익적 가치를 확산하고 있다.

We will carry on his vision and legacy as the APCTP further develops into a hub for global basic science cooperation." Meanwhile, APCTP, Korea's only international center for theoretical physics, was established in 1996 on the occasion of the APEC meeting. It currently collaborates with 19 member countries and 36 partner organizations in the Asia-Pacific region.To date, it has attracted and nurtured over 300 domestic and international scientific talents, and with support from the government's Science and Technology Promotion Fund and Korea Lottery Fund, it actively pursues joint research and academic exchanges.Furthermore, it promotes the public value of basic science through various citizen-focused activities, such as public lectures, science festivals, and youth programs.
