신임 김기석 총장은 경북대학교 전자공학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 전자공학으로 박사학위를 취득했다. 1997년 경주대학교 교수로 부임하여 학과장과 기획처장, 정보전산원장, 산학협력단장, 총장직무대행 등 학교내 주요 보직을 두루 역임했다.
김기석 총장은 구재단 즉 이순자 전총장의 불법 비리를 고발하여 4번의 부당 해직을 당하였지만, 복직하여 교수협의회 회장과 사학건정성 강화와 경주대서라벌대 정상화를 위한 공동대책 위원장을 역임하면서 2017년 교육부 종합감사를 통해 비리재단을 몰아내고 경주대학의 민주화와 정상화를 위해 헌신해 왔다.
