그 주인공은 현재 동해해경청 기획운영과에서 근무 중인 차민호 경장이다. 그의 외할아버지 故 손성기 선생은 6·25 전쟁 당시 육군으로 참전해 금와지구 전투에서 최전선에서 싸우다 총상을 입은 국가유공자다. 정부는 그의 공로를 기리며 2000년 화랑무공훈장을 수여한 바 있다.

그 숭고한 정신은 가족에게 이어졌다. 차민호 경장의 아버지 차동식 전 경정은 해양경찰관으로 30여 년간 해양 치안 현장을 지키며 구조작업과 불법 외국어선 단속 등 다양한 임무를 수행했다. 

2016년에는 정부포상 훈장을 받기도 했다. 은퇴 후에도 그는 “국민의 생명과 안전을 지키는 일은 가장 자랑스러운 사명”이라고 말하며 해양경찰에 대한 자부심을 드러냈다.

차민호 경장은 이러한 가정의 분위기 속에서 ‘사회에 보탬이 되는 사람’이 되겠다는 꿈을 키웠고, 2020년 해양경찰에 입직해 아버지의 뒤를 이었다. 그는 함정과 파출소, 동해해경청 등에서 해양 구조 및 순찰 등의 임무를 맡아왔다.

그는 임원파출소 근무 시절, 갯바위 고립자를 구조했던 경험을 떠올리며 “국민의 생명과 안전을 지켜내는 일이야말로 해양경찰로서 가장 보람 있는 순간”이라고 말했다.

“할아버지는 전쟁의 포화를 뚫고 나라를 지켰고, 아버지는 거친 파도 속에서 국민을 지켰습니다. 저는 동해바다와 독도를 지키는 해양경찰이 되었습니다.” 차 경장은 3대에 걸친 가족의 헌신을 이렇게 전했다.

현재 차민호 경장의 아내인 홍슬기 경장(동해해경청 해양안전과)도 같은 해양경찰로 근무 중이다. 부부는 서로 다른 현장에서 국민의 안전을 위해 각자의 역할을 다하며, 가족 전체가 국가와 국민을 위한 사명을 함께 실천하고 있다.

올해는 6·25 전쟁 발발 75주년을 맞는 해다. 동해해경은 “세대를 이어 조국에 대한 헌신을 이어가는 이들의 이야기가 오늘날 우리가 지켜야 할 가치의 의미를 다시금 일깨워준다”고 강조했다.

김성종 동해지방해양경찰청장은 “3대에 걸쳐 국가를 위해 헌신한 차민호 경장 가족이 자랑스럽다”며 “순국선열의 호국정신을 되새기며 동해와 독도를 지키는 데 최선을 다하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 차민호 경장은 지난 5월 13일, 국가보훈부로부터 ‘명예로운 보훈가족’으로 선정돼 태극기 기념패를 수상하며, 선대의 뜻을 이어받은 모범적인 제복근무자로서 인정받았다.

“My grandfather protected the country through the ravages of war, and my father protected the people in the rough waves. I became a Coast Guard member who protects the East Sea and Dokdo.” Superintendent Cha shared his family’s dedication over three generations.

Currently, Inspector Cha Min-ho’s wife, Inspector Hong Seul-gi (Donghae Coast Guard Maritime Safety Division), is also working as a Coast Guard officer. The couple each fulfill their roles for the safety of the people in different fields, and the entire family is practicing their mission for the country and the people together.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. The Donghae Coast Guard emphasized, “The stories of these people who have continued their devotion to their country for generations remind us of the meaning of the values ​​we must protect today.”

Donghae Regional Coast Guard Commissioner Kim Seong-jong said, “I am proud of Inspector Cha Min-ho’s family who have dedicated themselves to the country for three generations,” and “I will do my best to protect the East Sea and Dokdo while remembering the patriotic spirit of the martyrs.”

Meanwhile, Inspector Cha Min-ho was selected as an ‘honorable veteran family’ by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs on May 13 and received a Taegeukgi commemorative plaque, being recognized as an exemplary uniformed worker who has inherited the legacy of his predecessors.
