공교롭게도 그의 별세일은 박태준 명예회장 14주기를 하루 앞둔 날로, 한국 산업화의 현장에서 함께 땀 흘린 두 인물의 인연이 다시 한 번 조명됐다.

포스코홀딩스와 창업임원 모임인 중우회에 따르면 황 전 회장은 이날 오후 1시 18분께 서울아산병원에서 눈을 감았다. 빈소는 서울아산병원 장례식장에 마련됐으며, 발인은 14일 오전 11시 회사장으로 엄수된다.

평전 '세계 최고의 철강인, 박태준' 등에 따르면 황 전 회장과 박태준 회장의 인연은 1954년으로 거슬러 올라간다. 한국전쟁에서 형산강 전투 등을 거치며 사선을 넘나들었던 박태준 중령은 육군대학 수석 졸업 후 육사 교무처장으로 부임했고, 이때 후배 장교였던 황경로와 처음 만났다.

박태준 회장은 1964년 박정희 대통령의 요청으로 미국 유학을 접고 대한중석 사장으로 발탁됐다. 당시 중석(텅스텐)은 연간 수출액 3천만 달러 중 500만~600만 달러를 차지할 정도로 핵심 외화 수입원이었다. 그러나 정치권과 경영진의 부패로 조직은 극심한 부실에 빠져 있었다.

황 전 회장은 박 명예회장과 영욕을 함께했다. 1992년 박 회장이 정치적 시련을 겪으며 경영 일선에서 물러나자 황 전 회장은 포항제철 제2대 회장으로 선임됐다. 그러나 김영삼 정부 시절 진행된 세무조사 등과 맞물려 각종 비리 의혹이 제기되자 그는 취임 6개월 만에 사임했다. 이른바 ‘TJ파’로 불리던 박득표·이대공·유상부 등도 동시에 사정당국의 강도 높은 조사를 받으며 혹독한 시기를 겪었다.

박태준 명예회장 비서진 모임 관계자는 “올해 초 신년 인사를 겸한 점심 자리가 고인과의 마지막 만남이 됐다”며 “포스코 창업 원로들이 이제 몇 분 남지 않았지만, 이들의 헌신과 희생이 한국 산업 발전의 씨앗으로 남아 계속 이어지길 바란다”고 말했다.
