이어 “정부의 5극 3특 지원 기조와 통합 의지를 고려해 이번이 적기라고 판단했다”며 “광주·전남을 따라가는 것이 아니라, 통합 이슈는 대구·경북이 먼저 제기했고 민선 7·8기를 거치며 공론화해 온 만큼 지역 주도의 판단이었다”고 설명했다.

그러면서 “아직 실낱같은 시간이 남아 있다”며 “특별법이 조속히 국회를 통과해 광주·전남과 함께 출범할 수 있도록 여야 정치권의 합의를 간곡히 요청한다”고 밝혔다. 공무원과 시민사회에도 “미래 세대를 위한 사명이라는 인식으로 통합 대응에 함께해 달라”고 당부했다.
