경북학당은 경상북도가 외국인 유학생 3만 명 유치를 목표로 추진 중인 핵심 전략사업이다. 도내 대학이 주축이 되어 해외 현지에서 교육 프로그램을 직접 운영하고, 유학생 유치와 정주 기반 조성을 동시에 도모하는 것이 골자다.

대구대는 지난 6월 30일 울란바토르 내 대구대 사무소 및 인근 호텔에서 현판식과 개소식을 개최했다. 이 자리에는 박순진 총장을 비롯해 오영호 경북도 대학정책팀장, 몽골 교육부 관계자, 국회의원, 대학 총장 등 30여 명이 참석해 양국 간 교육 협력의 의의를 함께 나눴다.

이번 개소는 단순한 교육시설 확장을 넘어, 대구대와 경상북도가 함께 이끄는 한-몽 국제교육협력의 상징적 결실로 평가받고 있다.

개소한 경북학당은 ▲초급부터 고급까지 단계별 한국어 교육과정 운영 ▲경북도 및 대구대의 유학 및 취업 연계 프로그램 확대 ▲지속 가능한 한-몽 문화교류 및 교육협력 모델 구축이라는 세 가지 핵심 비전을 중심으로 운영된다.

강수태 대구대 국제처장은 비전 설명회에서 “경북학당은 몽골 내 한국어 교육의 중심이자 글로벌 인재 양성의 교두보가 될 것”이라며 기대감을 밝혔다.

대구대는 이번 방문 기간 동안 몽골 이흐자사크 국제대학과의 MOA(업무협약) 체결, 몽골과학기술대학교와 복수학위 과정 논의, 현지 고등학교와의 교류 협의 등을 통해 외국인 유학생 유치를 위한 전략적 기반을 강화했다.

또한 박순진 총장은 몽골 정부 청사에서 오치르바트 간바트 국회의원을 만나 몽골 학생 교류 확대 방안을 논의하고, 대구대 학생들이 참여 중인 몽골 하계 해외봉사활동 현장을 방문해 직접 격려에 나설 예정이다.

박 총장은 “경북학당은 단순한 교육 공간을 넘어, 한국과 몽골 간 국제협력의 상징이자, 몽골 청년들에게는 더 나은 미래를 향한 디딤돌이 될 것”이라며 “대구대는 글로벌 캠퍼스 네트워크 확장에 더욱 박차를 가하겠다”고 밝혔다.

 Daegu University Opens ‘Gyeongbuk Academy’ in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia… Global Education Hub in Full Operation

Daegu University (President Park Soon-jin) is strengthening its position as a global education hub by joining hands with Gyeongsangbuk-do (Governor Lee Cheol-woo) to open ‘Gyeongbuk Academy’ in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Gyeongbuk Academy is a key strategic project that Gyeongsangbuk-do is pursuing with the goal of attracting 30,000 international students. The goal is for universities in the province to directly operate educational programs overseas and simultaneously attract international students and establish a settlement foundation.

Daegu University held a plaque ceremony and opening ceremony at the Daegu University office in Ulaanbaatar and a nearby hotel on June 30. About 30 people, including President Park Soon-jin, Oh Young-ho, head of the Gyeongsangbuk-do University Policy Team, officials from the Mongolian Ministry of Education, members of the National Assembly, and university presidents, attended the event and shared the significance of educational cooperation between the two countries.

This opening is evaluated as a symbolic result of Korea-Mongolia international education cooperation led by Daegu University and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, rather than simply expanding educational facilities.

The newly opened Gyeongbuk Academy is operated with three core visions: ▲operating Korean language education courses from beginner to advanced levels, ▲expanding overseas study and employment programs of Gyeongbuk Province and Daegu University, and ▲establishing a sustainable Korea-Mongolia cultural exchange and education cooperation model.

Kang Soo-tae, Dean of the International Affairs Office at Daegu University, expressed his expectations during the vision briefing, saying, “Gyeongbuk Academy will become the center of Korean language education in Mongolia and a bridgehead for fostering global talent.”

During this visit, Daegu University strengthened its strategic foundation for attracting international students by signing an MOA (business agreement) with Ikhjasak International University in Mongolia, discussing dual degree programs with Mongolian University of Science and Technology, and negotiating exchanges with local high schools.

In addition, President Park Soon-jin will meet with National Assembly member Ochirbat Ganbat at the Mongolian government building to discuss ways to expand Mongolian student exchanges, and visit the site of Daegu University students’ summer overseas volunteer activities in Mongolia to personally encourage them. President Park said, “Gyeongbuk Academy will be more than just an educational space; it will be a symbol of international cooperation between Korea and Mongolia, and a stepping stone toward a better future for Mongolian youth,” adding, “Daegu University will further accelerate the expansion of its global campus network.”
