혹시 오늘도 현관문을 나서며 복도에 있는 방화문, 그냥 열려있진 않았나요? 많은 분들이 방화문을 보며 “열려있어도 괜찮겠지” 하고 지나치곤 합니다.

 그 문 하나가, 화재 시 우리 가족을 지켜주는 가장 든든한 방패가 된다는 사실을 모르는 경우가 많습니다. 

나와 내 가족을 지켜주는 가장 확실한 방법은 바로 방화문을 제대로 알고, 항상 닫아두는 습관입니다.

 아파트, 오피스텔, 빌딩 등 건축물에서 발생하는 화재는 불길보다도 연기가 먼저 확산됩니다. 

연기는 가열된 공기와 함께 위로 상승하려는 성질이 강해, 엘리베이터의 수직 이동 경로인 엘리베이터 샤프트나 계단실에서 초속 3 ~ 5미터의 속도로 상층부까지 순식간에 번집니다. 

복도에 퍼지는 연기 또한 초속 2 ~ 5미터로, 사람의 보행속도(초속 1 ~ 2미터)보다 빠르기 때문에 대피하는 사람은 짧은 시간 안에 연기에 금방 휩싸일 수 있습니다.

 또한 연기는 일산화탄소, 시안화수소, 염화수소 등 치명적인 독성물질을 포함하고 있어 몇 번 깊게 흡입하는 것만으로도 의식을 잃을 수 있으며, 수백 도까지 오르는 연기의 고온은 피부와 기도를 화상 입힐 수도 있습니다.

 이렇듯 유독물질을 포함한 고온의 연기는 엄청난 속도로 확산되기에 대피를 위해서는 반드시 방화문이 필요합니다. 이러한 방화문은‘닫혀 있는 상태’일 때 본래의 기능을 발휘합니다.

 방화문이 제 역할을 해낸 대표적인 사례로 2025년 1월 3일 발생한 성남시 BYC빌딩 화재를 들 수 있습니다. 

당시 1층 식당에서 시작된 불이 배기덕트를 통해 급격히 확산되었으나, 층마다 설치된 방화문이 정상적으로 닫혀 있어 연기와 불길을 막고, 대피 시간을 확보해 큰 피해를 막을 수 있었습니다. 

만약 위 건물에서 방화문이 제 역할을 하지 못하고 열려진 채 방치되어 있었다면 그 결과는 대형 인명피해로 이어졌을 가능성이 높습니다.

 의성소방서에서는 ‘방화문 닫기 안전 문화 운동’을 지속적으로 추진하고 있습니다. 거창한 것이 아닙니다. 바로 문 하나 닫는 습관을 함께 만드는 것입니다.

·대피할 때, 반드시 방화문을 닫아주세요.

·방화문 앞 물건을 치워주세요. 이웃의 생명을 막는 장벽이 될 수 있습니다.

·자동으로 닫히는지 확인해 주세요. 방화문은 닫혀야만 의미가 있습니다.

·열려 있는 방화문을 발견하면, 살짝 닫아주세요. 그것이 곧 생명 배려입니다.

이 작은 실천 하나가 우리 가족과 이웃의 생명을 지킬 수 있습니다.

어렵지 않습니다. 집을 나서기 전, “문이 닫혀 있나?” 한 번만 돌아봐 주세요.

방화문은 항상 닫혀 있어야 합니다.

Smoke also spreads through hallways at 2 to 5 meters per second, faster than the average human walking speed (1 to 2 meters per second). Therefore, anyone evacuating can be quickly engulfed in smoke.

Smoke also contains deadly toxic substances like carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and hydrogen chloride. Even a few deep inhalations can cause unconsciousness. The high temperature of the smoke, reaching hundreds of degrees Celsius, can also burn the skin and airway.

High-temperature smoke containing these toxic substances can spread at incredible speeds, making fire doors essential for evacuation. Fire doors function effectively only when they are closed.

A prime example of fire doors performing their intended function is the fire at the BYC Building in Seongnam City on January 3, 2025.

The fire, which started in the first-floor restaurant, rapidly spread through the exhaust duct. However, the fire doors installed on each floor were properly closed, blocking the smoke and flames and providing time for evacuation, preventing significant damage.

If the fire doors in the building had failed to function properly and remained open, the result would likely have been significant casualties.

The Uiseong Fire Department is continuously promoting the "Close Fire Door Safety Culture Campaign." It's not about anything grand. It's about creating a common habit of closing a door.

·When evacuating, always close the fire door.

·Remove any objects in front of the fire door. They can become a life-threatening barrier to your neighbors.

·Check that it closes automatically. Fire doors only function when they close.

·If you see an open fire door, gently close it. That's a sign of consideration for life.

This simple act can protect the lives of our families and neighbors.

It's not difficult. Before leaving your home, just look around and ask, "Is the door closed?"

Fire doors must always be closed.
