이 같은 분위기 속에서 구미시는 오는 12월 22일 구미상공회의소에서 '신공항 배후도시를 향한 구미~신공항 철도 신설 정책토론회'를 개최할 예정이다. 구미시가 주최하고 구미상공회의소가 주관하는 이번 토론회에는 김장호 구미시장과 박교상 구미시의회 의장, 윤재호 경북상공회의소 회장을 비롯해 기업 CEO와 경제단체 관계자 등 150여 명이 참석해 철도 신설 필요성에 대한 의견을 공유할 계획이다.

구미는 지난 반세기 동안 국가산업단지를 중심으로 대한민국 산업화를 이끌어 온 핵심 거점 도시다. 최근에는 반도체 클러스터, 방산혁신 클러스터 등 굵직한 국책사업이 잇따라 추진되고 남부권 반도체 혁신벨트에도 포함되며 국가 전략산업의 중심지로 다시 주목받고 있다.
