범죄예방환경설계(CPTED: Crime Prevention Through Environme ntal Design)는 학교 건축·환경의 적절한 설계와 효과적 사용을 통해 범죄 유발 요인을 근본적으로 제거해 범죄에 대한 자연적 감시가 이루어지도록 하는 것으로 감시성 강화, 접근통제 강화, 영역성 강화 등으로 구분한다.

이를 위해 경북교육청은 희망학교를 공모하여 학교 환경 안전 점검 결과 위험도가 높은 학교, 학교폭력 실태조사 및 자체 자료 등에 따른 우선 지원 필요 학교, 재개발 지역 등 10개 학교를 선정할 예정이다.

이에 따라 선정된 학교에는 교당 2천만 원의 예산을 지원해 범죄예방환경설계 기법을 적용·운영할 계획이다. 

이에 따라 지역사회 여건 및 학교 특성을 고려하여 △학교 영역 명료화를 위한 노후 CCTV 교체 및 추가 설치 △관찰 시야 확대를 위한 사각지대 조명 설치 △접근통제 강화를 위한 방범창 설치 △활동성 강화를 위한 사각지대 및 학교폭력 우려 공간에 휴게공간 설치 등 학교 환경 재설계를 통해 범죄 유발 요인을 근본적으로 제거해 범죄로부터 안전한 학교 환경을 조성하게 된다.

임종식 교육감은 “범죄예방 환경 설계를 활용한 학교 환경 재설계를 통해 학교안전사고 예방 및 학교폭력, 각종 범죄의 위협으로부터 학생을 안전하게 보호할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다.”며 “앞으로도 다양한 안전 사업을 추진해 학생과 학부모들이 신뢰할 수 있는 따뜻하고 안전한 교육환경 조성을 위해 노력하겠다.”고 말했다.
