POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation Transforms Aging Public Facilities in Local Communities into New Spaces of Hope
On April 7, POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation held a ceremony to unveil the ‘Hope Space’ in Gwangyang.
The ‘Hope Space’ project is one of the representative projects that POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation has been promoting since 2019. It is a project to improve the environment of facilities for the disabled and homes of children with disabilities and provide a safe and pleasant space.
Starting this year, POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation expanded the scope of the project to include not only facilities for the disabled but also aging public facilities such as community centers in the Pohang and Gwangyang regions that need a helping hand.
In April of this year, POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation received applications for the Hope Space project through Pohang and Gwangyang City Halls and administrative welfare centers, and a total of 53 applications were received.
The received locations were evaluated on-site based on urgency, safety, etc., and in July, 29 facilities and homes for the disabled and 10 local public facilities were selected as support recipients after a final evaluation with the 1% Sharing Foundation project selection committee and city officials.
The POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation identified areas that needed improvement, such as space expansion, exterior wall replacement, and ramp/handrail installation, for the 39 locations selected this year, and carried out customized remodeling, completing the improvement of all locations.
Meanwhile, the plaque ceremony was held at the Shinwon Village Hall in Daap-myeon, Gwangyang, which was selected as a Hope Space project and completed remodeling. The event was attended by Gwangyang Vice Mayor Kim Ki-hong, POSCO Sustainable Management Director Choi Young, the foundation project selection committee, Daap-myeon mayor, and Shinwon village chief.
The Shinwon Community Center is a place where about 30 senior citizens from four villages, Singi, Wondong, Oeap, and Naeap, use together. In order to improve the cramped space, a new space was built and heating facilities, painting, and flooring were installed. In particular, POSCO color steel plates were applied to the exterior walls of the expanded space to ensure excellent insulation and durability for the safety of the senior citizens.
In addition, benches made from upcycled work clothes of Gwangyang Steel Works employees were made and donated so that the senior citizens with limited mobility can rest comfortably outside, adding to the meaning of the community sharing activity.
Jang Young-saeng, the head of Shinwon Village, said, "The senior citizens had many concerns because their living space was cramped, but the difficulties were resolved by building an expanded building. I sincerely thank POSCO for stepping up and helping us."
Choi Young, head of POSCO's Sustainability Management Office, who attended the plaque ceremony, said, "We expect that the Hope Space Project will help improve the quality of life of the socially disadvantaged, such as the elderly and the disabled, by providing them with everyday convenience."
As of last year, the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation has supported the remodeling of 86 facilities for the disabled and low-income disabled children and youth households. In the future, the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation plans to continue to discover places in need of a helping hand, including the disabled, future generations, and vulnerable groups in local communities. <저작권자 ⓒ 브레이크뉴스 대구경북 무단전재 및 재배포 금지>
